Report: Porsche 911 GT3 RS to Arrive Late Summer

2014 Porsche 911 GT3

Building upon the already impressive performance of the Porsche 911 GT3, the upcoming Porsche 911 GT3 RS will arrive in toward the end of this summer. According to Auto Express, the German sports car will be lighter than the standard GT3, and thanks to an aerodynamic body kit, it will also offer 50 percent higher downforce.

The report also confirms much of what we had previously heard about the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Lighter-weight materials such as carbon fiber, thinner glass, and a stripped-down interior will help reduce weight. A titanium exhaust will likely replace the standard steel system, as well. Drawing inspiration from the outgoing Porsche 911 GT3 RS 4.0, the new model will sport an advanced aero kit. Front winglets attached to the front spoiler and an even larger rear wing boost downforce for improved acceleration. A wider track similar to that of the 911 Turbo is also part of the RS formula.

The GT3 RS will reportedly best the GT3’s 0-62 mph sprint time of 3.5 seconds — although this feat comes with the caveat of a reduced top speed (the standard GT3 manages 196 mph) due the extra drag created by the aerodynamic package. Racing driver Walter Rohrl has reportedly tested the new Porsche 911 GT3 RS around the famed Nürburgring, and Porsche predicts that the new model will beat the standard GT3’s lap time of 7 minutes, 25 seconds.

Porsche has not officially confirmed whether the latest 911 GT3 RS will use a tuned version of the GT3’s 3.8-liter straight six or a 4.0-liter powertrain. Power should nevertheless increase slightly over the standard 469 hp in the GT3, nearly broaching the 500-hp mark. The only available transmission will be Porsche’s dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission, with even quicker shift times than in the GT3.

Although the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is not set to arrive until late summer, further details about price and powertrain could emerge as early as next month. This could potentially mean announcement at the 2014 Geneva auto show, but we’ll likely have to wait around to find out for certain.
