Feature Flick: Chevrolet Sonic RS Sets Guinness World Record For Reverse Jump

The Chevrolet Sonic has entered the record books for a rather unusual stunt. Former pro skateboarder Rob Dyrdek successfully set a Guinness World Record for the "Farthest Reverse Ramp Jump by a Car," after launching the Chevrolet Sonic RS 89 feet and 3 inches… in reverse.

The stunt was performed in the parking lot of the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park as part of Dyrdek's MTV reality show, Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory. The Chevrolet Sonic RS reverses at speed toward one ramp, engine bouncing off its rev limiter, before flying in the air and landing safely on another ramp. Previously, the record for this stunt was 61 feet and 2 inches, set in 2008 by a stuntman reversing an Austin Allegro for the TV series Top Gear.

Dyrdek is no stranger to mixing skateboarding and high-flying automotive stunts. In 2011, he pulled off a "kickflip" barrel-roll jump in a different Chevrolet Sonic.

"I have always been a Chevy guy, so when we decided we wanted to set a Guinness World Record for the finale of 'Fantasy Factory,' using the Sonic again just made sense," Dyrdek said in a statement.

Though we wouldn't recommend attempting to recreate this stunt at home, Chevrolet is quick to point out that the Sonic comes with 10 airbags as standard. The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic RS, specifically, is a sportier variant of the small hatchback that uses shorter gear ratios to optimize the performance punch of its 138-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. The Chevrolet Sonic RS also has a racier body kit, a lower and stiffer suspension, unique 17-inch wheels, and interior niceties like aluminum pedals and a leather-wrapped shifter.
