The EPA has released official fuel economy numbers for GM’s redesigned 2015 lineup of full-size SUVs including the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Chevrolet Suburban, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and the Cadillac Escalade. For rear-wheel-drive models of the Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe, as well as the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, equipped with the 5.3-liter V-8 engine, these numbers rise to 16/23/18 mpg city/highway/combined.
That’s not only higher than last year’s 15/21/17 mpg ratings, but also tops all competitors in the full-size SUV segment. The next most efficient SUV in this class is the 2014 Ford Expedition with its 14/20/16 mpg numbers, though these are expected to rise for the 2015 Expedition thanks to the addition of Ford’s 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. The 5.3-liter V-8 engine in the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and pairs with a six-speed automatic on all models. Four-wheel-drive Tahoe and Yukon models with this engine receive ratings of 16/22/18 mpg city/highway/combined, with the larger four-wheel-drive Suburban and Yukon XL models dropping one mpg in the city for a 15/22/18 mpg rating.
The 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL are also available with an optional 6.2-liter V-8 that pumps out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain, which also matches with a six-speed automatic transmission, is rated at 15/21/17 mpg city/highway/combined with rear-wheel drive and 14/21/16 mpg with four-wheel drive on standard Yukon models. The four-wheel-drive Yukon XL with the 6.2L engine drops one mpg on the highway for a 14/20/16 mpg rating.
The new 2015 Cadillac Escalade, which comes standard with this same 6.2-liter engine, has also received EPA fuel economy ratings. The rear-wheel-drive Escalade gets 15/21/17 mpg city/highway combined, and the four-wheel-drive model gets 14/21/16 mpg. That’s also higher than the previous Cadillac Escalade’s 14/18/16 mpg with two-wheel drive and 13/18/15 mpg with four-wheel drive.
Stay tuned for our first drive of these new full-size SUVs next week to see how they compare with their predecessors. The 2015 Chevrolet Suburban and Tahoe and the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL go on sale by the end of the first quarter of 2014, with the 2015 Cadillac Escalade to follow later this spring.
