Veterans Charity Raises $700,000 from 2014 COPO Camaro at Barrett-Jackson

Chevrolet COPO Camaro

The Barrett-Jackson auction is well known for its collection of pristine collector cars of all generations, but is equally well-known in recent years for raising money for charitable causes through the auction of either the purchase rights for the new first vehicle off the line, or rare or collectible late-model vehicles. If you're into muscle cars and drag racing, and supporting wounded veterans, you'll be glad to learn a 2014 COPO Camaro at this year's auction netted $700,000 for the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans.

To refresh you on the origins and hardware on the COPO Camaro, the original COPO Camaro originated with the Pennsylvania dealer Yekno Chevrolet, founded and owned by Don Yenko. In order to have a unique product not available at other dealers, Yenko special-ordered a handful of Camaros from 1967-1968 with heavy-duty suspension, and swapped in the L-72 427 cubic-inch V-8 at his dealership. The vehicles received a unique fiberglass hood and special graphics. Because the engine was not installed at the factory, the Yenko Camaros were not recognized by many racing sanctioning bodies.

Chevrolet rectified that situation in 1969 by offering the L-72 as a factory Central Office Production Order (COPO) option. Yenko continued to sell the special-edition Camaros with the factory-installed big-block V-8.

The new fifth-generation COPO Camaro is offered with a choice of three engines, a supercharged 350 cubic-inch V-8, or a naturally-aspirated 369 or 427-cubic-inch engine. The naturally-aspirated engines are offered with a manual transmission, and all engines are available with Turbo 400 three-speed automatic built for racing duty.
