Report: Volkswagen Golf R Evo to Have 370 hp, Lightweight Materials

The Volkswagen Golf R is a more extreme version of the iconic Volkswagen GTI hot hatchback, and if a report from Autocar is to be believed, it’s about to spawn an even more hardcore variant called the Volkswagen Golf R Evo. This high-performance Golf could have as much as 370 hp and may lose a significant amount of weight thanks to a stripped-out interior and the use of lightweight materials like carbon fiber.

This potential Volkswagen Golf R Evo would be a limited-run, exclusive model, and Autocar says it could debut at the Beijing auto show in April of this year. This special Golf would be powered by the same 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 290 hp in the standard Golf R, but with performance enhancing tweaks like a new cylinder head and induction system to boost power to an impressive 370 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system from the standard Golf R would remain.

Although the standard 2015 Volkswagen Golf R is lighter than its predecessor, a potential Golf R Evo would lose more weight still from some carbon fiber body panels and a bare-bones interior. It’s a safe bet that the Volkswagen Golf R Evo would look considerably more aggressive as well, possibly taking cues from the wild Volkswagen Design Vision GTI Concept (pictured above) from last year’s Wörthsee festival in Germany.

Stay tuned for more news about the possibility of the hottest production Volkswagen Golf yet.
