Ford SYNC Applink Downloadable for 3.4 Million Vehicles

#Ford, #Ford

As technology becomes ever more crucial to fuel efficiency and safety, media and entertainment connectivity are not slowing down, either. Expanding the availability of Sync Applink to over 3.4 million existing vehicles, Ford will offer the in-car connectivity system for download on 2010 model-year and newer vehicles currently on the road.

Sync Applink offers smartphone-connected access to apps such as iHeart Radio, Spotify, Pandora, and NPR via voice control. Joining over one million newer vehicles that came from the factory with Sync Applink, the additional vehicles will later this year offer the same variety of voice-controlled apps and compatibility with iOS and Android operating systems.

The available upgrade will finally join Ford’s dual infotainment systems — MyFord Touch is currently operating on so-equipped vehicles as a separate system independent of Sync Applink, meaning that certain apps like Spotify are unavailable to those without the voice-activated connectivity system. Ford is focused on the idea that customers are interested in the personalization that in-car connectivity can offer, which it plans to expand beyond on-board entertainment.

“The opportunity is much bigger than just in-car technology – it’s now about connecting the vehicle to a larger ecosystem leveraging ‘the Internet of things,’” Ford executive vice president of global marketing, sales and service Jim Farley said in a statement. “We are creating a seamless and immersive experience for customers that begins with their first visit to our digital sites and continues throughout their ownership experience.”

The announcement comes just ahead of the 2014 Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas, where Ford last year announced that it was inviting outside developers to create Sync Applink-compatible software for use in Ford vehicles. Stay tuned for our coverage of this year’s CES event, which is scheduled for later this month.
