The Porsche 918 Spyder is one of the most exciting and impressive supercars to come around in a long time. This week on Ignition, host Carlos Lago takes this 887-hp hypercar on the track in Spain to see what its advanced hybrid drivetrain and complex electronics can do.
Watching the speed at which the Porsche 918 Spyder makes its way around the racetrack, it’s not hard to believe the car’s amazing 6 minute, 57 second lap around the Nürburgring. The 918 Spyder’s combination of electronic systems and brute force makes for a staggering combination of power and grip, and Lago is impressed right off the bat. It’s also exciting just to listen to the wail of the 918 Spyder’s 4.6-liter V-8 engine at full tilt.
Going through the Porsche 918 Spyder’s various drivetrain modes reveals the wide range of characters available within this supercar. There’s EV mode, which allows the 918 Spyder to run on battery power alone for up to 20 miles. Then, there’s a hybrid mode which uses the 918 Spyder’s V-8 engine in combination with the car’s electric motors like a traditional hybrid, with the engine shutting off under light loads. It’s in Hot Lap mode that the car really comes alive, though, when the Porsche 918 Spyder sharpens up all of its reflexes and utilizes the full 887 hp net power from the complex powertrain.
In the end, the Porsche 918 Spyder is most impressive for how it combines all of the elements together into a satisfying, fluid, and thrilling driving experience.
