Texas-based performance specialist Hennessey Performance Engineering has a well-established reputation for taking some of the most desirable high-performance vehicles and making them even faster. So it should come as a surprise to nobody that Hennessey is strapping twin turbos onto the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. Hennessey posted footage of its latest creation dyno testing on YouTube, and laying down 608 hp and 564.89 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. Hennessey claims this correlates to 708 crank hp.
Just a few years ago, an output of over 700 hp in a Corvette would seem unfathomably awesome. But in the day when Mustangs are rolling off the assembly line with 662 hp, and the just-unveiled 2015 Corvette Z06 will have at least 625 hp, that output may seem slightly tame. Even among some of Hennessey's other offerings of around 1000 hp, it seems mild.
But keep in mind the engine has been essentially untouched internally, meaning it still retains its stratospheric 11.5:1 compression ratio, effectively limiting maximum boost. Those craving even more power will probably want to hold out for the inevitable higher-horse version with lower-compression pistons and higher boost. The HPE700 is not currently CARB-certified, so sorry, Left Coast leadfoots, this one's going to remain a red state treat. The company also claims it will only produce 24 twin-turbo C7s for 2014, but we're sure if you came to Hennessey with a big enough check, they might reconsider. Watch the HPE700's dyno run below.
