Acura MDX
A sport-utility vehicle so good, it's just a car.

The 2014 MDX is the real flagship of the Acura line. The MDX's new look catches your eye, and it drives with reassuring composure thanks to a stretched wheelbase and great suspension tuning. The all-wheel-drive 3.5-liter V-6 model gets 18/27 mpg city/highway, while the suite of active safety features makes you feel good about packing the family inside. There's actually no more room inside than before, yet it feels more pleasant and has load of convenience and entertainment features. - Michael Jordan

WHY WE CARE
More efficiency, more safety, and more style express Acura's smart way of doing things.

On Sale: Now
Price: $43,185-$57,400
Engine: 3.5L V-6, 290 hp, 267 lb-ft

Acura RLX
Replacing the forlorn RL, the 2014 Acura RLX mixes stealthy exterior styling with a luxurious interior and a plethora of standard and optional techno-features. Look past its alien-eye LED headlamps and familiar Acura nose and you'll see a bigger, more stately Honda Accord. The wheelbase is two inches longer than the RL's, resulting in a more comfortable back seat. "Precision All-Wheel Steer" is the new RLX's headline technology, and it's designed to deliver a more neutral handling balance in corners. A bigger story is actually the active safety features like adaptive cruise control and anti-lane-departure measures, which produce a hint of autonomous driving. The more energetic, all-wheel-drive, 370-hp RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD arrives in December. - Todd Lassa

WHY WE CARE
The RLX hybrid will preview the powertrain of the NSX (on sale in 2015), although the long-awaited sports car will have more power.

On Sale: Now/December (RLX/hybrid)
Price: $49,345-$65,000 (est.)
Engines: 3.5L V-6, 310 hp, 272 lb-ft; 3.5L V-6/electric hybrid, 370 hp (net)

Aston Martin Vanquish Volante
Aston Martin has been struggling lately, but now that Mercedes-Benz has bought five percent of the company and will supply Aston with platforms and engines, the outlook is brighter for the British carmaker. The 2014 Vanquish Volante is a convertible variant of the Vanquish coupe, which replaced the DBS and is now the company's flagship. With a carbon-fiber body and a terminal velocity of 183 mph, the Volante isn't your average ragtop. Even so, the cloth top emerges from beneath a hard tonneau cover and snugs into place within fourteen seconds, which might be the sort of convertible performance you expect. The second-generation V-12, which now feels more alive with its 565 hp, is easy to love, and a six-speed automatic makes the engine easy to live with. - TL

WHY WE CARE
The all-wheel-drive R8 is incredibly easy to drive, which is partly why it sells in a way that Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, and McLaren envy.

On Sale: Now
Price: $300,820
Engine: 5.9L V-12, 565 hp, 457 lb-ft

Audi RS7
Prodigious power meets slinky styling.

Subtle styling cues belie the serious performance boost offered by the 2014 Audi RS7. Yes, the svelte sedan looks only a touch different from the S7, but it has an athletic and even angry nature. Although Mercedes-Benz and BMW have played longer in this segment of stylish supersedans, Audi's entry is formidable, offering a distinctive driving character and a fresher proposition for well-heeled enthusiasts.

The 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 is clearly the star of the RS7, delivering 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Paired with Audi's eight-speed Tiptronic automatic, the V-8 enables this all-wheel-drive car to sprint to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds en route to a top speed of 174 mph. Despite the prodigious power, there's no gas-guzzler tax, as EPA fuel-economy ratings come in at 16 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway, helped by a cylinder-deactivation feature that can shut down four of the eight cylinders.

As we drove the RS7 through the Black Forest in Germany on dramatic, winding roads, the car showed its stuff. The steering is a touch light on-center, as with most luxury cars, but there's little body roll through corners. The RS7 handles well for such a beefy sedan -- even better than we expected. The initial run of cars sold in the United States will come equipped with air suspensions, which will enhance comfort, while the more performance-oriented Dynamic Ride Control setup will be available soon after.

The Audi RS7 is a paradox in practicality. It has a cavernous hatch with room for nearly anything you could acquire during a run to a big-box store, yet it seats only four. Then again, cars with six-figure stickers are about performance and luxury, which this Audi achieves spectacularly. - Greg Migliore

WHY WE CARE
Powerful, sporty, and yet elegant, the RS7 perfectly expresses Audi's DNA. Mercedes and BMW should be nervous.

On Sale: Now
Price: $105,795
Engine: 4.0L twin-turbo V-8, 560 hp, 516 lb-ft

Audi R8
Since there's so much supercar news from elsewhere, it's no surprise that the 2014 Audi R8 has also been freshened, as you'll notice from the slightly reshaped grille, the LED headlights, and badge proliferation outside and in. More important, the most drivable supercar in the world gets even more drivable thanks to a new Audi-designed, seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox that Audi engineers say will shift faster and better than Porsche's PDK transmission. The V10 Plus model, the new centerpiece of the R8 line, has a 550-hp engine, firmer suspension, weight-saving carbon-fiber appendages, and carbon-ceramic brakes. - MJ

WHY WE CARE
The all-wheel-drive R8 is incredibly easy to drive, which is partly why it sells in a way that Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, and McLaren envy.

On Sale: Now
Price: $119,150-$182,595
Engines: 4.2L V-8, 430 hp, 317 lb-ft; 5.2L V-10, 525/550 hp, 391/398 lb-ft

Audi TDI's have jumped the shark.  Pricing out their core demo by a mere quarter mill premium pricetag...all the while stuffing that poor little eco-lux chassis with a gastly V12.  I'd rather buy a Sterling and replace the badging.
Oh Ms. Jennings where have my editors gone...The days of DED, RC and PJ O'... God bless'em.

Cruze diesel uses / needs urea additive, Jetta does not. Cruze diesel is only available fully loaded trim with leather, Jetta, more trim choice. Transmission choice?"beats the Germans at their own game"? NOPE! FAIL - GM & Automobile mag.

I liked the SS when it was a G8, and the styling has held up well. However, I wish GM would have went with the CTS VSports TT V6, 8 spd trans, and more aggressive styling. For the price though, what other sedan could match it other than something Bavarian for at least 20K more.

I just love the looks of the new Camaro!! The Z/28 will be a killer on the street, strip, and track!! The ball's in your court Mustang!!! I also love the new Stingray in either coup or convertible!! Can you say 29-30 mpg in a 455 hp sports car??? And I just can't wait to see a comparison between the SS, Charger, and 300!!! Should be a great year!!!

I love camaro
Kyree S. Williams
The looks are subjective, but it does have the performance to compete with the Chrysler 300 SRT8 and Dodge Charger SRT8, both of which are also around that price...

At least Chevrolet finally got rid of the double-chin grille

$44.5k for the SS! GM is having a laugh!
Bill Flintrop
The SS should be called "Impala SS" or "Caprice SS" because SS by itself doesn't make much sense.

I saw an 08' G8 at the store yesterday that looked better than that SS. Just saying, the SS is one boring looking car.
Doug Maxwell
