WHAT A nimble subcompact with a raised ride height.
THREE'S COMPANY As is Chevy, Ford is looking to get into the subcompact crossover segment started by the Nissan Juke. And much like the Juke, expect the Fiesta-based vehicle to use a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
WHAT A 180-hp turbocharged Lilliputian.
A LITTLE SIBLING RIVALRY Ford's edgy subcompact will turn up the fun factor even more with a tuned suspension and an additional 60 hp. To avoid stealing any of the Focus ST's glory and sales, the Fiesta will debut later in the car's life cycle.
Beyond the basics
Ford is betting big on small cars, adding four models to the U.S. market on top of the bread-and-butter Focus and Escape.
Late 2011 the 100-mile range from its lithium-ion battery is impressive, but What really sets the Focus apart is a high-power charger that delivers a full charge from a 240-volt outlet in less than four hours.
Mid-2012 Ford is getting back into the minivan game, but this time the seven-passenger people mover is a mini-minivan, similar to the Mazda 5. Power comes from either a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder or the new 1.6-liter turbo four.
Late 2012 We Won't get the gasoline-powered European C-Max with four conventional doors, but it will serve as host to two hybrid powertrains. The conventional hybrid operates much like the Fusion Hybrid, with a CVT splitting power between the engine and the motor...
Late 2012 The plug-in variant will offer a short electric-only driving range before the gas engine kicks on. Ford's not saying how many miles that is, but we're guessing it's closer to fourteen than forty.
Sierra All Terrain HD
WHAT GM gets into the off-roading game.
GETTING DIRTY GMC's Sierra All Terrain HD concept splits the difference between the desert-running Ford F-150 SVT Raptor and the rock-crawling Ram Power Wagon. The long-travel suspension uses Fox dampers for high-speed off-road sprints, while front and rear differential lockers and a disconnectable front antiroll bar improve traction and wheel articulation. The production All Terrain will likely drop the concept's diesel engine and will be assembled by a third party but will still be sold through GMC dealers.
