I know it may not make much sense from a rational or economical standpoint, but the single most redeeming quality of my 2000 GTI was its engine. It certainly wasn't the quality, that's for sure! To this day, I still think the VR6 (strangely, specifically the 12-valve models) have one of the most sonorous engine noises on the planet. That, and the wonderfully linear torque delivery. I don't miss the 18.5 average mpg, however, much of which can be attributed to me wanting to hear that melodious intake and exhaust song over and over. :-)

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but the Buick V-6 was used in full-size GM cars in the early 80's in a 4.1L size.
Was this not a version of the Buick V-6 mentioned in the story?

No disrespect to Buick, but what's so remarkable about the 4.1? It's just a punched out 3.8. The only thing historically interesting about it is that it's loosely based on the old Buick 215 aluminum-block V8, the tooling was later sold to Kaiser, and then bought back. So...interesting from a historical standpoint, but not really from an engineering standpoint, unless you're talking about the Buick Grand National or GNX.

esanchez, don't you mean the Buick 225 V-6 was sold to Kaiser?

The 215 V-8 has some cool history but I think it was sold to Rover.
