First Look: 2010 5 by Peugeot

Yes, Geneva, there will be two hybrid Peugeot concepts premiering at the 2010 Geneva motor show. The latest, billed as the “5 by Peugeot,” is said to be a preview of future Peugeots.

Peugeot is most proud of its hybrid technology, which it dubs “HYbrid4.” The system allows the vehicle to be driven by the front, rear, or all four wheels, and also allows for pure electric operation. In the 5, the system uses a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel I-4 that channels its 163 hp to the front wheels. A 37-hp electric motor is delegated to power the rear wheels. Peugeot says the system allows the large sedan to return an estimated 62 mpg.

Perhaps more interesting, however, is the 5’s styling. Like the SR1 (which will also be shown in Geneva), the 5 hints at a new design ethic for Peugeot, eschewing the gaping front fascia and large headlamps for a more stylish (if not sedate) appearance. Modern LED-tube daytime running lights are wrapped around the headlights and in the side grille openings. Flowing lines continue from the headlights to the taillights, which bear some resemblance to the Jaguar XJ.

Peugeot’s 5 helps preview the company’s future ambitions to play in the large luxury vehicle segment. Presently, the largest Peugeot is the 607, which competes against the likes of BMW’s 5-series. Peugeot will gauge consumer reaction to determine if it’s willing to jump into the segment, but regardless of the decision, expect many of these styling cues to reappear on future Peugeot sedans.
