Diesel has one BIG advantage over gasoline. There is no limit to the power that can be generated using diesel. Gasoline is limited to the point where it begins to "knock". Diesel has no such limitations. The only limitations to the power than can be created with a diesel engine is the strength of the engine itself.

Tonka...you're right, to a point. But the smoke show you see at tractor pulls and diesel drags is just that for the most part...show. Lots of smoke just means high EGTs and wasted fuel for the most part. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of modern diesels, but some of the technologies that first appeared on diesels, like direct injection and turbocharging, are proving successful on gas engines.
