My own personal opinions, new cars are being driven, not by a driver but by a computer - not just with transmissions but other systems as well.  I'll stay true to an old-fashioned, antiquated technology of a manual transmission along with its disadvantages over the new advanced transmissions of today's cars.  One of the few remaining parts of a car that I can still have full control over. Maybe one day I'll switch over but for now, I still prefer to row my own gears.

The manual transmission is dead. The automakers still show them on their websites, but try actually finding a real one at a dealership.

guse1219: What kind of car were you looking for? A Camry? If the car has even the slightest sporty pretensions, they'll have at least a couple around. Of course, if you can wait, the dealer will happily order you one to the specs you want.

Today's automatics may be more precise at launch or when up shifting going straight. But when it comes to driving on narrow mountain or ocean coast roads, nothing beats a good ol fashioned short throw manual, I don't care how many clutches the automatic has.

When comparing auto and manual transmissions, it would be nice to see a side-by-side comparison. This article doesn't add much value in comparing the two.

What about the other important metrics: up front cost, reliability, durability, service intervals, & maintenance cost over 5 years.
Creating a summary will allow consumers to make informed decisions in picking the transmission as each consumer has different priorities.

Lastly - when comparing fuel economy, it is important to declare final gear ratios.  Final gear ratios (keep all others equal) will have a impact on fuel economy ratings.  One example: 2009 Honda Fit 5 speed manual versus auto.
manual 5th gear ratio: 0.727
auto 5th gear ratio: 0.552

manual fuel economy: 27/33/29
auto fuel economy:
28/35/31

It would be good to see manufactures design manual transmissions for fuel economy by adding that 6th gear or modifying gear ratios to bias for fuel economy.
