Day 8

We drive to Long Island for a 4th-of-July barbeque, and it's dark by the time we're on our way home. Just as we're about to reach our exit on the parkway, we see fireworks in the sky up ahead. We stop and join several other cars, to watch the fireworks display from the shoulder of the parkway. What a totally American way to experience our country's birthday celebration - from the comfort of one's own car.
How appropriate it is that we're in this high technology, U.S.-made machine. I get a sense that what underlies the positive reactions the fuel cell Equinox elicits is a desire on the part of Americans to see our country innovate its way out of the current gas crisis. Warnings about oil running out, fears of global warming, even the terrorist attacks of September 11th, didn't instill this sense of purpose. Now that gasoline is expensive, people really want technology to come to the rescue and move us beyond the gasoline-powered internal combustion engine. Surely the country that put a man on the moon can find another way to power our cars and give us back one of our most cherished freedoms: our mobility. With a concerted effort, maybe it can.
