GM and Fiat's $2 billion divorce earlier this year could have spelled the end to Alfa Romeo's plans to return to the United States, since Fiat had planned to distribute Alfas through selected members of the General's dealer network and to avail itself of GM's parts bin. Instead, Fiat will go it alone, resurrecting the Alfa Romeo brand here in two or three years' time with a small two-car lineup: the stunning new Brera coupe (pictured) and the upcoming softtop version.
A top Alfa source says the new convertible, called the Spider, will debut at the Geneva show in March. The current plan is to sell the cars out of Ferrari-Maserati dealerships as junior exotics.
