Maranello grants us a glimpse of the 456M's scintillating successor.

Set to debut at January's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Ferrari's 612 Scaglietti succeeds the aging (but still lovely) 456M as the company's two-plus-two grand tourer. Although designed by Pininfarina, the car is named in honor of stylist and coachbuilder Sergio Scaglietti, who penned such memorable Ferraris as the 500TRC racer of 1957.

The 612 features an all-aluminum spaceframe structure, similar to that of the 360 Modena: The result is a 60-percent increase in structural rigidity and significantly improved crashworthiness over the 456. The scallop-sided body evokes the magnificent 375MM coupe that Pininfarina built for the 1954 Paris motor show—a car later owned by Roberto Rossellini and used by Ingrid Bergman.

Although the 612 weighs a 132 pounds less than the 456, it is significantly roomier inside, thanks to a slightly higher roofline and a 5.5-inch increase in overall length. The trunk is fully twenty-five percent larger than the 456's, able to swallow two golf bags or Ferrari's custom-fitted five-piece luggage set.

Beneath the 612's long, long hood lurks a front-mid-mounted 65-degree V-12 displacing 5748 cc. It's good for 540 horsepower and 435 pound-feet of torque, and pairs to either a traditional six-speed manual gearbox or a paddle-operated six-speed sequential manual dubbed F1A. Ferrari claims the car will make the sprint to 62 mph in 4.2 seconds and press on to a top speed of 196 mph.
