LISTS: Poll: Pick Your Favorite Volkswagen GTI

By Automobile Magazine - February 15, 2007
When we announced the 2007 Volkswagen GTI as the Automobile Magazine Automobile of the Year in January, we decided we'd like to see GTIs that some of our readers own. We had a good response in our forums, with a lot of very cool little hatches. We decided we'd narrow them down to our five favorites, and let you all vote for what you think is the best one. Check out the pictures below, and then vote in the poll down the page. For the original forum containing more cars and pictures, click here.

Car #1: Forum member 1CLNA2 contributed pictures of this 1989 GTI that resides in New Stanton, Pennsylvania. It's a 16V with the original paint and interior. Modifications include Lenso 17" wheels, RPI springs, TT exhaust, single round headlights with a Kamei lip spoiler, and smoked tails. The owner is proud to report that with 187,605 miles on it, this GTI is still running strong.

Car #3: Another '89, this one posted by A McDermott. It has "its original 1.8 with Autotech cams, european 50mm manifold, Eurosport air intake and a custom geared tranny. The suspension is full race with coilovers with 512lb springs in front and 467lb springs in the rear. Upper and lower front bracing with a rollbar inside and Neuspeed antiroll bars 25mm F and 28mm R. Wheels are 15 x 9 Compomotive CXN's with Germany only 215/40-15 Dunlops. Inside has Corbeau seating and 8 VDO gauges monitoring the car. Outside is custom paint with shaved everything and custom arches allowing the wide wheels. Handles incredibly and so much fun." Pretty sweet.

Car #4: One of our wilder customs came from 20thgti2461. It's a 2003 20th Anniversary edition Mk4 with the 1.8T and a 6-speed. Along with yellow 18-inch wheels, it has a Porsche Cayenne front bumper, HID headlights, and a custom paint scheme. It uses Revo software and dyno tests have shown 201 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque at the wheels.

Car #5: 95MullberryVR6 has been a VW lover his whole life, starting his driving career with an '88 Jetta diesel. This is his second GTI, one of only 289 Mullberry GTIs with a VR6. It's got $27,000 worth of mods, including a widebody kit, racing seats, and a rebuilt, bored-out, 3.0-liter.
