Despite sliding ratings and waning interest, the Indianapolis 500 is still the most famous race in the world. Here are some reminders of the time when it was also the most anticipated.
Racing Flags
This set includes seven racing flags exactly like those used at the Brickyard. They come in an Indianapolis Motor Speedway display stand suitable for wall mounting. ($190)
Tom Carnegie Bobblehead
Track announcer Tom Carnegie has been calling the Indy 500 since 1946-longevity that merits the kind of recognition only a talking bobblehead can provide. This well-done likeness of the venerable PA man says three of Carnegie's most memorable lines, including "Aaaand it's a new track record!" We only wish the name of the "spedway" were spelled correctly on the base. ($30)
Indianapolis 500: The legacy series DVD set
This five-disc set is a fantastic way both to get pumped up for upcoming races and to take a look back at the winners, heroes, and technologies of yesteryear. There's a disc for each decade from the '60s through the '90s, and they're all filled with fabulous vintage video, detailed results, and insightful interviews with past victors. A bonus disc adds an image gallery and additional documentaries (there are extra goodies on the decade discs, too). The set features top-shelf production and easy-to-use, period-themed menus. It's also an outstanding value. ($40)
