Any good business must learn to adapt. If you are making too much butter but every consumer wants margarine you must adapt. Still the real story of the big three is that of diminished brand value because of too many bad experiences.

Reliability, features, and build quality were the things lacking for a long time in American cars. The truth is even the Chevy Cobalt XFE still is not the value proposition it should be. Take those horrible tires for instance. I own a Toyota Corolla and I removed the horrible OE rubber in the first year of ownership and slapped on some Toyo Versado tires in a size larger. Guess what? I still get 28 mpg combined and the car is a 2004 (purchased in 2003) with 113,000 miles on it.
