2012 Dodge Challenger
2012 Dodge Challenger
The original Challenger was a latecomer to the pony-car party in 1970, and it ducked out early. As a result, it didn't have the lasting impact of the Ford Mustang or the Chevrolet Camaro, but it still drew enthusiasts and Mopar gearheads, and that was enough to encourage Dodge to come out with a modern iteration. For 2012, the Challenger's Trim Levels have been renamed in an attempt to make them more consistent with the rest of Dodge's lineup. The Dodge Challenger SXT and SXT Plus models are powered by a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that makes 305 hp, the Challenger R/T has a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 with 375 hp, and the SRT8 model gets a nostalgically named "392" 6.4-liter Hemi that puts out 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Challenger isn't just a blunt instrument that was made to go fast, although that is a task it performs very well, if we do say so ourselves. There are an abundance of high-tech features available for the Challenger lineup, from a Uconnect 6.5-inch touchscreen display with a hard drive on which more than 150 hours of music and photos can be stored to an available 900-watt, eighteen-speaker premium audio surround-sound system from Harman Kardon. The Challenger is a modern muscle car that can be outfitted to be as functional as it is fast.

While the Challenger has never been a top performer, some might say the car is more than the sum of its parts. In this episode of Ignition, Motor Trend associate road test editor Carlos Lago takes what would otherwise be a rained-out day of testing, and turns it into a road trip adventure with the goal of finding the reason behind the Challenger’s existence, along with a slice of apple pie.

Chrysler has had great success with its Clint Eastwood-narrated ad from this year's Super Bowl. Now, the automaker is looking to capitalize on that commercial's success by spinning off four new ads for each of its brands from parts of the original commercial. Each of the four new spots stems from scenes in the original Super Bowl commercial. Representing the Jeep brand is "Jenny in the Jeep Wrangler" – a school-age kid who has moved to a new town with her mother and brother for her mother to find work. Working long hours at a construction site and never complaining about tough times is "Tommy and the Ram" with a Ram HD. Touching on the noble and honorable men and women who have served our country, the Dodge brand has a touching vignette – "Shaun in the Challenger" -- about a boy and his father enjoying the school run in dad's Challenger now that his father is home from duty. Finally, "300 My Son Steven" is narrated by a father regretting working too hard and not being there for his son; however, he is proud of his boy, paving his own way and starting his own law firm – plus, he drives a Chrysler 300S. Check out all four of the new commercials below, along with the original two-minute-long ad from the Super Bowl. Source: YouTube Jenny in the Jeep Wrangler:
