What if you could drive a Land Rover that gets 21 mpg instead of 14 mpg yet suffers little in real-world acceleration? You can, at least in Europe. While in England, we tested two versions of the Discovery 3 (Europe's LR3): one with a 2.7-liter turbo-diesel V-6 and one with the same gasoline 4.4-liter V-8 that powers our Four Seasons LR3. The oil-burning Disco isn't fast, but it keeps pace with the more expensive V-8 except in an all-out drag race, thanks to 328 lb-ft of torque at only 1900 rpm compared with the V-8's 315 lb-ft of torque at a lofty 4000 rpm. Let's hope Land Rover decides to engineer its new 3.6-liter diesel V-8 and a rumored 3.0-liter diesel V-6 for the U.S. market. Read full article
