New For 2013

Powertrain-grade braking can now be activated in normal transmission mode (previously it was only possible in Tow/Haul mode). On downhill grades, the transmission downshifts to lessen the need for long braking applications and to reduce rotor strain. Champagne silver metallic, concord metallic, and blue ray metallic exterior colors are new.

Overview

The Tahoe is the Suburban’s marginally smaller—it’s about two feet shorter, overall—but still pretty beefy brother. It comes with the same 5.3-liter engines and, most interesting, an available hybrid powertrain. The Tahoe Hybrid is powered by a 6.0-liter V-8 supplemented by electric motors. At low speeds, it can operate on electric power only, engine power only, or a combination of the two. At highway speeds, electric assist as well as Active Fuel Management (four of eight cylinders shut down when extra power isn’t needed) work to reduce fuel consumption. The Hybrid’s EPA numbers for city driving are impressive for such a large vehicle, with a 5-mpg jump in efficiency for both two- and four-wheel-drive models. Although the 300-volt nickel-metal hydride battery pack adds about 360 pounds to the Tahoe’s curb weight, Chevy was able to find room for the pack under the floor, so it doesn’t cut into passenger space. The Tahoe’s interior finishes and overall layout are identical to those in the Suburban, as is its passenger capacity. Where it differs from its larger sibling is in cargo capacity behind the third row, which drops from 28.9 to 16.9 cubic feet. Driving the Tahoe is much like driving the larger Suburban, although the Hybrid’s regenerative brakes lack feel and can be grabby, especially at lower speeds.

Safety

Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; tire-pressure monitors; and traction and stability control are standard. OnStar is standard and automatically calls for help when a crash occurs. A backup sensor, a rearview camera, and blind-spot warning are optional.

2014 Chevrolet Tahoe Spied Front Three Quarter
The development of the next-generation Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade is well under way, and Truck Trend has the pictures to prove it. Our colleagues recently caught this camouflaged 2014 Chevy Tahoe testing on roads right outside GM's Milford Proving Grounds. Despite what the blacked-out oval mounted in the grille may have you thinking, this tester’s the other design cues reveal it’s clearly the work of the Bowtie boys. Up front, the next-gen Tahoe gets a grille that looks influenced slightly by the 2014 Impala, with the addition of a strong horizontal bar slashing though the center, similar to the design element that has adorned Tahoe and Suburbans as far back as the early 1970s. Some other styling cues we can pick up from this heavily camouflaged mule include a completely new front bumper, the return of the prominent tow hooks, and the presence of front (and rear) parking sensors on this tester. One thing this Tahoe mule doesn't reveal, though, is its headlights. Although it wears pre-production stand-in headlights, the 2014 Tahoe's headlights will probably be smaller and likely featured LED running lamps. From its side and rear profiles, we can tell the next-gen Tahoe will be boxier and more sharply styled than its somewhat-rounded predecessors. The 2014 Tahoe will get a new rear spoiler with an LED center-mounted stop light, and a tailgate that’s more square-cut than before. A glimpse at the rear also reveals this body-on-frame behemoth will likely retain its solid-rear axle. Though details on the 2014 Tahoe's powertrain remain scarce, the Tahoe will remain available in two- or four-wheel drive, and more than likely have a six-speed automatic transmission, with an eight-speed automatic transmission available sometime after launch. Engine options will more than likely include a direct-injected version of GM's 6.2-liter V-8, as well as a 5.3-liter or 5.5-liter direct-injected V-8. The Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac will all ride on a shortened version of the 2014 Silverado/Sierra chassis, codenamed "K2UC" for the Chevy, and "K2UG" for the GMC. The Cadillac's codename isn't yet known. The 2014 Chevy Tahoe, GMC Yukon, and Cadillac Escalade will go into production late this year at GM's Arlington Truck Plant. STEERING:COLUMN LOCKING:ANTI-THEFT DEVICE
Summary
General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Savana, Sierra HD, Sierra LD, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles, manufactured between November 7, 2012, through December 18, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect", and FMVSS No. 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention." The vehicles may have been built with a fractured park lock cable or a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly.
Consequences
As a result, the vehicle may shift from Park with the ignition key removed or the ignition key in the OFF position. The vehicle may also shift out of Park without application of the brake pedal while the key is off. Either of these scenarios may cause the vehicle to roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible vehicle crash and/or injury.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the steering column as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 21, 2013. Chevrolet owners may call 1-800-630-2438. Cadillac owners may call 1-866-982-2339. GMC owners may call 1-866-996-9463.
