2013 Chevrolet Suburban Front Right Side View 3
Today's Suburban isn't quite as old as the nameplate itself, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2010, but it is showing its age. General Motors launched the GMT900 range of trucks almost seven years ago, and thanks to a number of factors -- including a frosty full-size truck market and that bankruptcy you might have heard about– the typical mid-cycle update granted to its predecessors never happened. Save for some minor tweaks, including the addition of a USB audio input within the cellar-like center console and an electronic trailer brake controller placed just left of the steering column, what you see is essentially GM's state of the art circa 2006. Which is to say it was ho-hum then, and is completely outdated now. The Suburban's cabin -- even in fully-loaded LTZ guise -- looks old and schmaltzy, and lacks the fit and finish that you'd expect from a truck pushing $60k.

The Problem: On certain General Motors trucks and SUVs built in November and December 2012, the parking-lock cable may be fractured or the lock actuator may not have been built correctly. That means that a driver could move the vehicle's transmission out of Park without pushing the brake pedal and without a key in the ignition. Moreover, drivers could remove the key and think they had selected Park while the transmission was actually in another gear. This could lead to the trucks rolling away unexpectedly while parked, possibly hitting other vehicles or people -- although GM claims it hasn't received any reports of crashes or injuries so far.
Top 11 Three Row SUVs
If you want to carry your entire family or a big group of friends on a road trip, you'll need a vehicle with lots of seating and plenty of cargo room. Minivans are typically the go-to choice for carrying seven passengers and their baggage, but they're dull to look at and equally dull to drive. We prefer the style and sophistication of a three-row crossover or SUV. Unfortunately, in a quest to cram in three rows of seats, many large SUVs have only marginal amounts of cargo room. An Audi Q7 with all three rows of seats occupied has less cargo room than a Ford Fiesta, for instance. That makes little sense given that anyone traveling with seven or eight passengers will probably have a lot of stuff on board, too.

Summary
General Motors (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, and Escalade EXT; Chevrolet Avalanche, Express, Silverado HD, Silverado LD, Suburban, and Tahoe; and GMC Savana, Sierra HD, Sierra LD, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles, manufactured between November 7, 2012, through December 18, 2012, for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 102, "Transmission Shift Lever Sequence, Starter Interlock, and Transmission Braking Effect", and FMVSS No. 114, "Theft Protection and Rollaway Prevention." The vehicles may have been built with a fractured park lock cable or a malformed steering column lock actuator gear in the lock module assembly.
Consequences
As a result, the vehicle may shift from Park with the ignition key removed or the ignition key in the OFF position. The vehicle may also shift out of Park without application of the brake pedal while the key is off. Either of these scenarios may cause the vehicle to roll away after the driver has exited the vehicle, resulting in a possible vehicle crash and/or injury.
Remedy
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the steering column as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 21, 2013. Chevrolet owners may call 1-800-630-2438. Cadillac owners may call 1-866-982-2339. GMC owners may call 1-866-996-9463.
