New For 2013

Except for a carbon-fiber hood, fenders, and floor panels, the new 427 convertible is basically a droptop version of the Z06. For 2013, it and the rest of the Corvette clan can be dressed up in the 60th Anniversary Design Package that includes dark blue seats with baby blue accents, anniversary logos on the seats and steering wheel, and racing stripes that even make it onto the cloth top of convertible models.

The year 2013 is the Corvette’s sixtieth anniversary and the C6’s final year of production. To mark these milestones, Chevy puts the Z06’s 7.0-liter V-8, drivetrain, and rear axle into a carbon-fiber-reinforced droptop to produce the 427 convertible. It may be Chevy’s fastest convertible ever, but it doesn’t knock the top-spec ZR1 off its pedestal. With a 6.2-liter supercharged LS9 V-8 that pumps out an incredible 638 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque, the ZR1 is the first production Corvette capable of crossing the 200-mph threshold. As for the other Corvettes? The base and Grand Sport models use a 6.2-liter V-8, but the GS gets a number of upgrades, including Z06 styling cues, its own gear (manual transmission) and rear-axle ratios, and available Magnetic Selective Ride Control. The 505-hp boy-racer Z06 neatly fills the gap between the base model and the ZR1 and can be had in a limited-edition Carbon model, which adds a number of performance and cosmetic upgrades, including ZR1-style aerodynamic aids, carbon-ceramic Brembo brakes, and Magnetic Selective Ride Control. In fact, every Corvette model has numerous performance and cosmetic packages that allow buyers to customize their car down to the color of the brake calipers. Interior quality remains an Achilles’ heel, but the Vette continues to offer unrivaled bang for the buck.

Front and side air bags, traction and stability control, ABS, and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard.

Chevrolet Builds Last C6 Corvette
It’s customary to sign a card for a departing coworker, or perhaps bring in a cake and have a get-together. Employees at Chevrolet’s Bowling Green Assembly Plant said goodbye to an old friend at the end of last month, but there wasn’t any time for cake: the old friend was the sixth-generation (2005-2013) Chevrolet Corvette, and workers quickly got back to work preparing to build its replacement: the 2014 Corvette.

The Hennessey Venom GT is the fastest-accelerating car from 0-186 mph, according to Guinness World Records. A 1244-hp Venom GT running 93-octane fuel completed the run in just 13.63 seconds and hit the 200-mph mark in an unofficial 14.1 seconds. The run was made at Ellington Airport outside of Houston earlier this month. Two runs in opposite directions, to compensate for wind, were averaged for the record, which was verified by a VBox 3i GPS-based data logging system
