New for 2014

Though the 2014 Toyota Yaris is relatively unchanged from the previous model year, daytime running lights and a new stereo are now standard.

Vehicle Overview

Slotting in below the compact Corolla sedan, the Toyota Yaris is the automaker’s subcompact hatchback, available in two- or four-door forms.

All 2014 Toyota Yaris models come standard with the 1.5-liter I-4 that makes 106 hp and 103 lb-ft of torque. Buyers get a standard five-speed manual, which gets an EPA-estimated 30/38 mpg city/highway, or an optional four-speed automatic that gets 30/35 mpg. The Yaris gets nine airbags as standard equipment.

The 2014 Toyota Yaris four-door hatchback received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and in IIHS testing received a rating of good in four categories (the highest-possible rating is good), but received a rating of marginal in the new, more difficult, small overlap front test. The two-door hatchback has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

In a First Drive of the 2012 Toyota Yaris we noted that the car “needed to kick down a ratio or two when any kind of incline was present or when a passing maneuver was called for. We recommend the manual transmission, where the driver is fully in charge of gear selection.” In an Editor’s Notebook review for a 2012 Yaris SE we commented that the Yaris, “doesn’t take enough of a step forward to keep up in this increasingly competitive segment.” Another criticism is that, while fuel economy would have been great years prior, when midsize sedans with automatics are getting 34 mpg on the highway, a subcompact should be doing notably better than 35 mpg.
