Overview

The Land Cruiser last received a full redesign in 2008, when a good economy and low gas prices ensured strong demand for big, cushy trucks. That’s all gone, but the Land Cruiser is still one of the most comfortable ways of getting around, especially if getting around involves going off-road. The seventh-generation Land Cruiser has pretty much everything you could ask for, starting with a 5.7-liter V-8 that produces a hefty 381 hp. Paired with a smooth six-speed automatic transmission, it hurls this 5765-pound vehicle to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds. Of course, you pay for this quickness at the pump. For off-roading, features such as multiterrain ABS and five-speed crawl control provide optimal traction on any surface. The Land Cruiser offers a plush on-road ride and plenty of premium features, including parking assistance and fourteen stereo speakers. But the live rear axle and the chunky body-on-frame construction mean it’s not as nimble as newer, more carlike crossovers. The big Toyota has long departed from its utilitarian roots, but a higher base price for 2013 (formerly optional equipment is now standard) puts it even higher in the luxury stratosphere. It also brings it into more direct competition with the similarly plush Land Rover Range Rover, which is all-new this year.

Safety

Front, side, side curtain, and front knee air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; trailer-sway control; and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard. A one-year complimentary subscription to Toyota’s Safety Connect service, which includes emergency and roadside assistance, is standard.
