Sum Up

The 2013 Suzuki SX4 SportBack is a sporty little option. This vehicle offers great features at an affordable price that is rather appealing to today’s younger car consumer. Rather than giving a driver acceptable performance and basic features and a boring package, the SX4 SportBack is much more. This vehicle combines high mileage with impressive performance that belies its accessibility and value. Styling of the sport back is decidedly European. A lower ride height and wider profile give it edging is with a hint of sophistication. With an interior that is simple yet comfortable, this is an all-around great option.

New For 2013

Crossover and SportBack models receive a subtly revised front fascia with more prominent vertical lines. With the dropping of the Technology trim level, the SportBack is now available only one way. The Crossover gets a new hue (plasma yellow), new aluminum wheels, and an available TouchFree Smart Key.

The look of the 2013 Suzuki SX4 Sportback is attractive and hints at luxury. The shape and exterior features of this vehicle make it somewhat difficult to truly define. While it’s very small size makes it difficult to truly refer to it as an SUV, it has the primary features such as a tailgate and impressive shaping of that class of vehicle. What is less difficult to describe is the 2013 Suzuki SX4 SportBack’s sleek, sporty styling. A rather large windshield and curving hood are reminiscent of more European styled vehicle. The addition of unique front fenders and other unique details given a decidedly sporty edge. 17-inch wheels are customary on this class of vehicle.

The looks of this vehicle aren’t going to win any awards for being extremely innovative or completely unique. A few unexpected exterior details, however, will make people look twice. The 2013 model has been subtly revised to include a more vertical perspective. This creates the illusion of more height and a slightly more aggressive visual.

Interior & Cargo

Some of the more economical options in the crossover category leave a lot to be desired when it comes to the interior. This is not the case with the 2013 Suzuki SX4 Sportback. While definitely not elaborate, the interior is definitely welcoming. It is refreshingly simple, yet has everything a driver would need for a safe and comfortable ride. The cloth bucket seats are surprisingly comfortable. Whether just driving in normal day-to-day activities or dealing with more challenging situations, they are firm and supportive. High seating position makes passengers feel more in control. This allows for the vehicle to feel larger. In a class where feeling small, especially up against the bulky assistive SUVs, this is a pleasant feature. The well thought-out instrumentation is user-friendly and visually appealing.

A quiet interior and open visibility allows for a peaceful and pleasant ride. Courteous details include plenty of cup holders and small storage compartments throughout the interior. The interior from the driver’s perspective has definitely pushed aside the bells and whistles and gimmicks that are common in today’s car industry. While it’s not bare, the cockpit is clean, organized, and sturdy. All but the tallest of drivers will find the head and legroom comfortable. Rear passengers are also given a pleasant amount of room. This makes for a comfortable ride even on long trips.

When the rear seats are up the cargo room is a slightly limited 10 cubic feet. But the split second row of seats can be folded down completely opening up to 54 cubic feet of cargo space.

The safety features of the 2013 Suzuki SX4 SportBack does leave some to be desired. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety offers ratings of ?Good? for both frontal offset and side impact tests. Tests for rear crash protection and roof strength, however, brought back results of only marginal. The overall rating for safety from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is somewhat less bleak. With an overall rating of four stars, it is only the side testing that dips below a four-star rating.

Safety features include a host of airbags such as those for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers. Anti-lock brakes and daytime running lights complement technology such as an electronic stability control system to improve safety.

Driving Experience

What the 2013 Suzuki SX4 SportBack doesn’t offer in sheer size, it makes up for in power. The 2.0-liter engine is capable of 140 horsepower. The wide track in a solidly built body provides strong, firm handling. One disadvantage of a vehicle with this solidity, however, is weight. Because this is a heavier vehicle than others in its size range, there is some dip in the fuel economy. When driving over slippery terrain, the all-wheel drive capability provides traction and stability.

This vehicle offers a sporty ride. This in no way implies an uncomfortable ride, however. The study and sharp steering of this vehicle make it a fun option. One fantastic feature is the optional Smart Key system. This is the next level of the keyless entry option. Drivers do not even need to make contact with their vehicle in order to unlock the doors and even start the ignition. The system senses when the key has come within a certain vicinity of the vehicle and automatically allows entry and optionally starts the car.
