New for 2015

The Mitsubishi Outlander was redesigned for the 2014 model year, and as such it receives only minor changes for 2015, including Bluetooth; a leather-wrapped steering wheel; updated grille, bumper, and wheel arch trim; new fog bezels; improved suspension tuning; improved CVT calibration; and more sound insulation.

Vehicle Overview

The Mitsubishi Outlander is a three-row midsize crossover that offers excellent steering and an all-wheel-drive system derived from the performance-focused Lancer Evolution. The Outlander sits above the two-row Outlander Sport in the Mitsubishi lineup.


The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander is powered by a 2.4-liter I-4 that makes 166 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, which is standard on ES, SE, and SE S-AWC models (all-wheel drive). The I-4 is paired exclusively with a CVT. The EPA rates the front-drive model for 25/31 mpg (city/highway), and fuel economy drops to 24/29 mpg while powering all four wheels. The available 224-hp 3.0-liter V-6 makes 215 lb-ft of torque and gets exclusively paired with a six-speed automatic that drives all four wheels. The EPA estimates 20/28 mpg for drivers of the V-6 models.

Notable features include super all-wheel control (AWD), paddle shifters, dual-zone automatic climate control, folding second and third rows (up to 128.6 square feet of cargo capacity), power remote tailgate, HID headlights, a 6.1-inch infotainment screen or 7.0-inch navigation screen, and a 710-watt Rockford Fosgate premium audio system.

The 2015 Outlander comes with a host of safety features, including forward collision alert, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision mitigation, and seven airbags. The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander received a four- and five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), with the AWD model getting the higher rating. The Outlander is also considered a Top Safety Pick+ for 2015 by the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 Mitsubishi Outlander takes the excellent steering and the capable S-AWC all-wheel-drive system from the Lancer Evolution, making it one of the better driving three-row crossovers in the segment. Although the four-cylinder engine is all about fuel efficiency, the 3.0-liter V-6 is a little closer to what we hope for, though not as refined as we’d like. The power and torque advantage over the I-4 is welcomed, but we wonder why a detuned version of that vaunted turbo I-4 from the Evo doesn’t make its way over. Unfortunately, for the Outlander’s most recent redesign, Mitsubishi exchanged distinctive styling for smooth and bland. This change has resulted in a low coefficient of drag (0.33), providing improved fuel economy. The sea of cheap plastic that the Outlander borrows from the Lancer also remains. It’s safe (IIHS Top Safety Pick+) and has all the requisite tech and safety gadgets, but it does little to stand out from the incredibly competitive crowd.
