Want to carry 7 people in vehicle that doesn’t scream “soccer mom” and want decent mileage as well. Enter the CX-9. With its three rows of seating, respectable fuel economy, handling, and smooth lines make for a stylish, yet practical people hauler. It has been in production since 1996, 2010 sees a minor refresh. As it was the 2008 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the year, they haven’t seen the need to make any major changes.

This vehicle can haul 7 people in car like comfort. It’s four wheel independent suspension provide a sporty ride, and helps control body roll even over rough pavement. Some may find this very controlled ride to be somewhat firmer than that of the competition. Steering is also well executed on the CX-9. Perfectly weighted and very responsive. This goes a long way towards driver confidence behind the wheel of this large Mazda.

While it’s available in several trim levels, they are all powered by a 3.7 liter V-6 generating 273 horsepower and 270 Ft.- lbs. of torque. This power is routed through a six speed automatic transmission.

A back-up camera is available for the first time in 2010.

Designers hoped to achieve a “sophisticated appearance” with the CX-9’s redesign. A thick chrome bar makes the front grille pop, while the flowing profile, raked windshield, and muscular corners evoke an attractive sports car like attitude.

Three zone climate control, power windows, and plenty of rear under storage come standard on the CX-9. Leather wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and center armrest, as well as Bluetooth connectivity are also included. How does 100.7 cubic-feet of cargo room (with both second and third rows folded) sound?

The 2010 CX-9’s 3.7-liter V-6 makes 263 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. It’s a fun big ride thanks to the fully independent suspension fore and aft. If towing or soft-roading is your thing, go with the all-wheel drive setup that’s capable of sending as much as 50 of torque to the rear rubber when the situation warrants.

Driver and passenger dual front, side, and side curtain airbags come standard on the CX-9. Dynamic stability control and traction control help to keep all four wheels planted. On Grand Touring models, there’s also an available blind spot monitoring system.
