New for 2015

The Chevrolet Equinox enters 2015 with Blue Velvet Metallic and Sea Grass Metallic as newly available exterior colors. OnStar with 4G LTE and a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot now includes a three-month trial with 3GB of data.

Vehicle Overview

The Chevrolet Equinox is a five-passenger midsize crossover that slots in below the seven-passenger three-row Traverse and above the new subcompact Trax.

The 2015 Chevrolet Equinox comes with front- or all-wheel drive, and pairs either of its available engines to a six-speed automatic transmission. The more economical 2.4-liter I-4 makes 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque, which is good for an EPA-estimated 22/32 mpg city/highway in FWD trim, and 20/29 mpg in AWD. Buyers who want more power, or the ability to tow up-to 3,500 pounds, can upgrade to the 301-hp 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 272 lb-ft of torque and nets an EPA-estimated 17/24 mpg in FWD form, and 16/23 in AWD.

The 2015 Chevrolet Equinox received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and is considered a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. The Equinox includes several standout safety features: forward collision alert system and a lane departure system; both of which help earn the highest possible IIHS rating.

What We Think

The old adage “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” applied when Chevrolet mildly updated the Equinox in 2013, and it’s true now. As the automaker’s third-best-selling vehicle (behind the Cruze and Silverado) we can see why they’ve stuck to it. The 3.6-liter V-6 is powerful, the steering (a traditional hydraulic setup over the typical electric power assist) is precise, and the dual-flow dampers help to improve the handling.
