New for 2015
The 2015 Cadillac CTS gets a revised Cadillac crest, available DockSpot wireless phone charging, the latest CUE system with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot (with 4G LTE) that requires a subscription, perpendicular parking has been added to the automated parking assist, lane keep assist and lane change alerts have been added to the Drive Awareness Package, Crystal White Tricoat and Dark Adriatic Blue Metallic are added as exterior color options, and interior colors are revised with trim combinations.
The Cadillac CTS is a midsize luxury sport sedan that fits in size above the ATS and below the XTS in the automaker’s lineup. The CTS is available in rear- and all-wheel drive, and spans the range of models from the more efficient turbocharged I-4 to the high-performance Vsport.
The 2015 Cadillac CTS comes standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 272 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, gets a six-speed automatic, and can drive all four wheels instead of just the rears. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19-20/28-30 mpg city/highway, with a slight penalty for AWD. The volume upgrade will be the 321-hp 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 275 lb-ft of torque, which can also pair its six-speed automatic with RWD or AWD for an EPA-estimated range of 18/26-29 mpg, with a penalty for AWD. The high-performance Vsport pairs an eight-speed automatic with a twin-turbocharged 3.6-liter V-6 that turns out 420 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque, which drives the rear wheels exclusively. EPA-estimated mileage is 16/24 mpg.
While an even higher-performance CTS-V sedan will arrive for 2016 to challenge entries from BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the CTS stacks up well in terms of features. Some available 2015 CTS features include an 8-inch infotainment screen, head-up display, automatic parking assist (parallel and perpendicular spaces are supported), the safety alert seat (vibrations in the seat alert the driver to dangers detected by the various suite of safety sensors), lane keep assist and lane change alerts, forward collision and rear cross traffic alerts, side blind zone alert, and full-speed range adaptive cruise control.
The 2015 Cadillac CTS received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and in IIHS testing received two ratings of good (the highest possible rating is good).
What We Think
We named the 2014 Cadillac CTS an AUTOMOBILE All-Star, and with good reason: Cadillac has finally done what they’ve sought to do for a number of years: Made a car that dethrones the German competition from the head of luxury sports car segment. Ride quality and handling are what you’d expect from a Cadillac, but handling is impressive as the traction control only interferes when necessary. Steering feedback is good, the Magnetic Ride Control insures that handling and comfort aren’t mutually exclusive, and the Vsport model is an incredible car.
We have a Four Seasons 2014 CTS Vsport in our fleet, and we’re impressed with our All-Star. “Turn off traction control and it’s not hard to coax the back end to come around … it’s a bit terrifying in a car this big, but it’s also a lot of fun. Not too hard to control the big sedan when it gets unruly,” we said. “The sharp reflexes and balanced handling of the ATS are in full force here, which is surprising given the CTS’ 500-pound weight increase over its little brother.”
But, alas, the CTS is not without flaws outside of the much maligned CUE system and its difficult-to-use set of capacitive touch buttons and layered menus. Throttle tip-in has been criticized, and one editor noted that it’s often hard to drive smoothly without lurching away from every stop. The question of initial quality versus material wear reared its ugly head as we noticed some creaks and squeaks from the interior. Look for the more powerful CTS-V to be introduced for the 2016 model year.
