Base 2.0T models see power increased from 211 hp to 220, although torque remains unchanged at 258 lb-ft. Bluetooth, Homelink, a driver’s information center, and a USB audio interface are now standard equipment on the 2014 Audi A5, while Audi Drive Select is optional on A5 models and standard on S5 and RS5 models. All A5 and S5 models are also available with a Black Optic exterior package, while the A5 Prestige comes equipped with the S-Line exterior package as standard equipment.

Vehicle Summary

Given that Audi’s A4 grew in size to better compete against the BMW 3 Series, it’s not surprising that the A4 spawned a two-door coupe and cabriolet to compete against the 3 Series (now called 4 Series) coupe and convertible. Upon the A5’s introduction for 2008, we declared it to be our Design of the Year. We still think it’s gorgeous.


If there were an Academy Award for cars, the 2014 Audi A5 might win the Oscar, as few other automobiles today have such range. From mild to downright wild, the 2014 Audi A5 offers a flavor to suit almost anyone.

All 2014 Audi A5 models are powered by the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-banger, which is also found in the A5’s sibling, the A4. Drivelines, however, vary based on body style: all A5 coupes are equipped with Quattro all-wheel drive, while the entry-level A5 cabriolet boasts front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission. A six-speed manual is standard in A5 coupes but unavailable in convertibles.

A5s drive well enough, but the 2014 S5 has the power to match its slinky styling. Audi’s 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 is both incredibly smooth and powerful, and its 333 hp and 325 lb-ft provide quite a punch. There’s enough power on tap to rocket the car from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 4.9 seconds. Better yet, the S5 coupe is available with the same superb six-speed manual offered in the S4 sedan.

But what if you’re eyeing a BMW M3? That’s where the hairy RS5 coupe and cabriolet come in. Like the outgoing M3, the Audi RS5 is a Germanic muscle car, making use of an old-school, normally aspirated V-8. The RS5’s 4.2-liter is similar to the engine used in the R8 supercar and delivers 450 hp, 316 lb-ft of torque, and redlines north of 8000 rpm. No manual transmission is offered, but a quick-draw seven-speed dual-clutch automatic bangs off shifts in the blink of an eye. All told, it allows the RS5 to rocket to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds; 4.9 seconds if you opt for the cabriolet. The RS5 is a bit sterile on the racetrack, but the torque-vectoring rear differential encourages the back end to rotate in corners. There may be more responsive, more balanced sports cars for the money, but few have the personality — let alone the all-weather traction — of the RS5.
