2015 Cadillac SRX
2015 Cadillac SRX

New for 2015

The Cadillac SRX adds a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot (requires a subscription), and adds two new exterior color options for 2015: Cocoa Bronze Metallic and Majestic Plum Metallic.

Vehicle Overview

The Cadillac SRX is a two-row crossover that is powered by a capable V-6 engine, which can be equipped with an all-wheel-drive system. The SRX combines luxury and passenger-hauling capability with an abundance of convenience features. The SRX sits below the Escalade as the smallest SUV in the Cadillac lineup, and shares its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. Once a sporty two-row crossover, the SRX is now a competitor to the ubiquitous Lexus RX.

Summary

The 2015 Cadillac SRX is powered by a 308-hp 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 265 lb-ft of torque, which gets paired with a six-speed automatic transmission that drives the front wheels. EPA estimates place the SRX at 17/24 mpg city/highway, while models fitted with an AWD system average 16/23 mpg. Despite being Cadillac's least-expensive crossover, the SRX gets a number of premium features, such as HID headlights, LED taillights, a panoramic sunroof, heated/ventilated front seats, tri-zone climate control, Cadillac CUE infotainment system, and the availability of a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Safety features include a rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision alert, lane departure warning, side blind zone alert, and the GM Safety Alert Seat. The neat take on integration “intuitively sends subtle pulses through the seat cushion left or right, or simultaneously, alerting you to a variety of potential hazards as well as the direction.” The rear seatback splits 60/40, and features such as the underfloor storage bin and a U-rail integrated cargo management system.
The 2015 Cadillac SRX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and in IIHS testing received four ratings of Good (the highest possible rating is Good).

What We Think

The 2015 Cadillac SRX is a competent, nicely appointed, two-row crossover that delivers a planted ride. In a Driven review of a 2012 Cadillac SRX we said, “Eighteen-inch wheels are standard, but even with the optional twenty-inch wheels the SRX kept its composure on surfaces that sometimes were pretty rough. Front-drive is standard, but Cadillac will emphasize the availability of the sophisticated all-wheel-drive system. Response from the hydraulically assisted rack-and-pinion steering, which firms up nicely in turns, is praiseworthy, but pedal feel when activating the twin-piston front and single-piston rear disc brakes provoked some muttering.” We also praised the athleticism of the not insubstantial crossover, noting, “In our test, the SRX galloped over Santa Barbara County backroads, displaying the exuberance of a two-year-old filly even while evidencing the bulk of a twelve-year-old Clydesdale. And no matter what drolleries are dispensed through the carefully tuned exhaust, the lovely cabin remains tranquil, thanks to acoustic deadeners that pull the tophat down on the engine's cleverly chattering Charlie McCarthy.” Horse analogies aside, the SRX rev-matches with downshifts and despite the direct injection (they tend to be noisy) remains a quiet, composed 308 hp mill that impresses.
The excellence has not gone unnoticed on the sales front, as the SRX trails the Lexus RX in sales, but leads the BMW X3 (and X5), Acura RDX, Audi Q5, and Mercedes Benz M-Class (as of March 2015). The only other crossover to beat it in sales was the Acura MDX, which competes in price with the more loaded SRX trim levels. If you want some sport with your luxury, the BMW X3 would prove to be a better choice, and if fuel economy is more important, hybrid and diesel powertrains from the German entries merit consideration. Otherwise, the Cadillac SRX makes a compelling style statement in the segment led by the conservative RX.
