2013 Buick Encore
2013 Buick Encore

New For 2013

The Encore is an all-new entry for 2013. It’s expected to arrive in dealerships in the first quarter of the year.

Crossovers are getting smaller, and the new Buick Encore is one of the smallest of all. More petite than a Chevy Equinox, the Encore is closer in size to a Mini Countryman. Buick designers endeavored to give it Buick styling cues, but they couldn’t disguise the Encore’s tall, stubby proportions. Despite its diminutive footprint, however, the Encore has a reasonable amount of space inside for four people and can haul a fair bit of luggage. The Encore is based on the platform of the Chevy Cruze sedan and uses the same 1.4-liter, direct-injected turbocharged four that’s available in the Cruze. Output is estimated at 140 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, delivered via a six-speed automatic transmission to either the front or all four wheels. The Encore’s curb weight of 3190 pounds (with front-wheel drive) is within 50 pounds of the Cruze, so performance should be similar. Like many direct-injected fours, this 1.4-liter isn’t exactly mellifluous, but Encore drivers might not notice, because Buick engineers used active noise cancellation in the Encore to mask its droning. This baby Buick boasts some other upscale equipment, including leather, navigation, heated seats, a heated steering wheel, a power driver’s seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, front and rear park assist, lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert, and a backup camera.

Front, side, side curtain, and knee air bags; ABS; a tire-pressure monitor; and stability and traction control are standard. A backup camera, forward-collision alert, and lane-departure warning are available. OnStar includes crash response and emergency assistance, which are part of the safe and sound package.

You'll like:

This summer has been a good one for U.S. auto sales, and it peaked in August. After flirting with the 16-million-unit level in June, and receding a bit in July, the industry vaulted over that marker in August, as the annualized sales rate reached 16.1 million units. Not only was this August's pace the most torrid of 2013, it's the best since 2007. Compared to last August, automakers were up an average of 17%, when the sales rate was 14.5 million units. Once again, pickup trucks were hot (bolstered by a fast-improving housing sector), and they were joined by sizzling sales of luxury cars. A rich model mix and lower incentives made for transaction prices that were at an all-time high -- extra-good news for the industry, if not for consumers.

Dinosaurs staring in the Buick Encore’s first TV commercial show how nimble the compact crossover is compared to traditionally large luxury cars – like those once built by Buick. The ad attempts to get the attention of younger customers with the relatively inexpensive and compact Encore, as we noted in our 2013 Buick Encore First Drive.

The Buick Enclave revolutionized the brand from Flint, Michigan, when the three-row, seven-passenger package hit the market in 2007. With the sensibilities of a family crossover yet the trappings of an upscale luxury car, the Enclave drew parents into Buick showrooms that had for years attracted more grandparents than the early-bird roast beef special. In fact the Enclave set the stage for a subsequent overhaul of the entire Buick lineup, and the average age of a Buick buyer dropped to 57 from 64.
