The arrival of the controversial X5M and X6M might be confirmation that BMW has dumped every engineering principle that made its M cars so distinctive and consistently good for the last thirty years. Until now, all M cars have had a high-revving, normally aspirated engine, a manual or automated manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, and a sedan or sports car shell. You won't find a single one of these qualities in M's latest efforts.
The M versions of the X5 and X6 sport-utes go on sale in the fall, but BMW allowed us to drive prototypes at its winter test center in northern Sweden several months ago. Under their skins, the two trucks are the same: both use an M-massaged version of the twin-turbocharged V-8 and the trick rear differential from the X6 xDrive50i. The 4.4-liter V-8 engine has been boosted from 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque to 555 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.
Unlike other M cars, there's no delicate balancing of clutch and revs to hinder a clean getaway, and no fiddling with the launch control system, either. Engage D in the regular six-speed automatic transmission, boot the throttle, and the mighty engine slings you forward with a loud, raspy roar-and complete disregard for the behemoths' 5300-pound mass. BMW promises their wundertrucks will be quicker and cheaper than the Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo.
The xDrive all-wheel-drive system has been reprogrammed to send more torque to the rear axle and keep it there. It lets you indulge in long drifts that an M3 would be proud of. Low-grip surfaces emphasize the precision and delicacy of the steering and brakes.
IT'S BIG AND HEAVY, BUT IT'S STILL GOT AN M BADGE ON IT: One engineer slipped-doubtless deliberately-that, in testing, the X6M is as quick around the Nürburgring as an M3. You can be as upset as you like about the inherent absurdity of a 550-hp sport SUV, but it's hard to argue with how good these particular ones are to drive.

The diesel engines we've been promised for the past few years are finally hitting the U.S. market. Anyone who has travelled to Europe probably noticed that about half of the vehicles on the road were powered by diesel engines. The current crop of European diesels headed to America are incredibly clean and refined with virtually no noticeable diesel traits other than superior fuel economy.

With every diesel SUV variant that I drive, I wonder why people are still buying the gas alternatives. Compared to its V-8 counterpart, this BMW X5 xDrive35d is just as comfortable, significantly more efficient, and less expensive. Rated at 19 mpg in the city, and 26 mpg on the highway, the X5 35d is also more fuel-efficient than the Mercedes-Benz GL350 BlueTec and the Audi Q7 TDI. As Phil mentions, the BMW diesel is a bit louder than both the Mercedes and the Audi, especially when cold or under acceleration. However, that's a negligible tradeoff for the excellent flexibility of this engine.

This X5 came as a winter blessing to frozen tundra called Michigan. Its massive sunroof had me sitting back in awe at the stoplight as I soaked up the sun kissing my face... that was until the idiot behind me decided to break the mood with his horn. Dude! My moment of bliss!

The turbo-diesel X5 feels incredibly torquey and peppy around town, particularly for such a large vehicle. Mix that with the excellent fuel economy (19/26 mpg EPA city/highway versus the six-cylinder gasoline version's 15/21 mpg and the V-8 edition's 14/19 mpg), and you've easily got yourself the best X5 powertrain on the market today, as I expressed after driving a similar X5 35d last summer.

This BMW X5 35d is the latest in a long list of excellent German diesels that have cycled through our office in the last several months. I agree that the BMW diesel engine is a bit more noticeable than those in either of its main competitors but it's fairly inaudible once you're underway.

As we pull onto the highway away from Windhoek, Namibia, the first car that passes the taxi is a red Honda S2000. My taxi driver scrupulously obeys the speed limit, and we're soon passed again, this time by a black BMW M3 convertible. Then another M3 convertible goes past. The dueling M3s are soon forced to slow down as a crowd of baboons crosses the highway. BMWs negotiating a baboon chicane: Welcome to Africa!

Over the course of the week, our route will take us from Okapuka west to the ocean, then north and inland in a broad loop that will eventually return us to our starting point. My right-hand-drive X5 has 14,000 kilometers on the odometer, and I ask Frank Isenberg, head of the BMW Driver Training programs, how long it's been in Africa. "Three years," he replies. All of these SUVs have been on this tour of duty since the revised X5 rolled out. Parking sensors dangle uselessly from bumpers. Rocker panels have been rocked. A crack meanders across my BMW's windshield. Inside, the iDrive screen flashes a succession of alarming messages - "4x4 system and DSC failed!" "No warnings from Park Distance Control." "Active steering inactive." Does that make it just "steering"?

A few hundred clicks into our drive, we pull over at Vogelfederberg, a vast, turtle-shaped hunk of rock that casts a mighty shadow over the surrounding desert. Much to my happy surprise, cold beer is produced. This is the glory of traveling with Germans - they're always prepared. And this, I must say, is a mighty fine place to enjoy a cold beverage. I climb an escarpment and gaze out over the desert while sipping my Tafel Lager. It's about 7000 miles from here to New York City, and it feels even farther.

Eventually we head inland, toward the dunes of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. We're barely a quarter mile in when one of our drivers, too ginger with the throttle, buries his tires and sinks to the rocker panels. Rookie mistake, I think, until I, too, get stuck climbing a steep dune. I back down and try again in a lower gear, exploding over the top of the dune in a shower of fine sand. This earns me a reprimand from the BMW guys, who are a smidge sensitive right now about overcooking it on the dunes. On the last tour, a couple weeks ago, a Russian got a little throttle-happy out here and inadvertently kicked off his own private X5 Games, losing major points for failing to execute his front flip off the top of a sand mountain. He and his girlfriend walked away, but the truck is no longer much of a driver.

During some downtime the next day, I wander into a local museum to learn about the history of the area. Inside, I find an exhibit sponsored by the giant mining company Rössing. The exhibit is all about how great it is to mine uranium. A placard on the wall reads: "Employees working in radiation designation areas provide urine samples regularly, which are analyzed for traces of uranium."

Back in the BMW, I have a new appreciation for the X5's amenities. Mainly, the air-conditioning, which I actually shouldn't get too attached to, because we're going to drive up a dry riverbed to reach our next stop, the Ai Aiba Lodge. You can either get to Ai Aiba or have air-conditioning, but on this sweltering day, you can't have both.

On the final day, we head back to Okapuka, stopping at one of Namibia's few wineries for lunch and a tour. By now everyone's got a major case of the sillies, as evidenced by a lunchtime experiment to find out whether it is literally hot enough to fry an egg. When BMW guys are letting people crack an egg onto the hood of an X5 to see if it'll cook (and it does, slowly), you know that a bit of mental frazzling is setting in.

Judging by the new-model intros from European carmakers, you'd think the bubble economy was still going strong. At Mercedes-Benz, AMG has been developing a new supercar and a new E63; BMW's M division has laid its hands on the X5 and the X6; Porsche is rolling out the Panamera; and Alfa Romeo has priced its 8C roadster at a cool $300K. It's sort of a collective, "What, me worry?" spoken with a (mostly German) accent.
