2013 BMW 6-Series
2013 BMW 6-Series

New For 2013

The latest 6-series debuted for 2012, and this year BMW fills out the lineup. The four-door Gran Coupe is now here, in six-cylinder (640i) and V-8 (650i) form. All three body styles can be had with all-wheel drive. In addition to the M Sport package, there is now an honest-to-goodness M6 coupe and convertible (but—not yet—an M6 Gran Coupe). The M6 borrows its powertrain from the M5.

Like many recent BMWs, the 6-series emerged from its redesign considerably better looking than before. Historically, the 6-series has been offered as a coupe and a convertible. The convertible features a uniquely designed soft top whose rear edges extend rearward, framing a vertical back window that is power operated and can be raised or lowered independently of the roof. Now, BMW is adding the first-ever four-door 6-series, the Gran Coupe (pictured). Like the two-door and the convertible, the Gran Coupe is available as the turbocharged six-cylinder 640i or the 650i with a turbo V-8. The V-8 can be had with all-wheel drive, which is unusual for a coupe/convertible. The 6 also offers a manual transmission (in the 650i), a choice that’s increasingly rare in this class. Do not, however, conclude that the availability of a stick shift means the 6-series is a highly involving sports car. It is not. Granted, its performance is impressive—even the 640i can race to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, and the all-wheel-drive V-8 version can do it in as little as 4.7 seconds. Even quicker is the M6, which returns—as a two-door coupe or convertible only—after a two-year absence. Its turbo V-8 packs 560 hp and is paired exclusively with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. Much more so than before, the new M6 deftly combines luxury and performance.

Front, side, and side curtain air bags (in the coupe); active head restraints for the front seats; traction and stability control; ABS; a tire-pressure monitor; a rearview camera; adaptive xenon headlamps; and adaptive brake lights are standard on all models. Night vision is optional.

BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Uwe Duttmann Model Reflection In Window Close Crop
Mercedes-Benz isn’t the only German automaker involved in the art scene, as BMW plans to exhibit a series of retro photos featuring the 6 Series Gran Coupe at Paris Photo LA, an international photography show held at Paramount Pictures Studios. The photos were captured in the lens of German photographer Uwe Düttmann, and take inspiration from burlesque and film noir.
2013 BMW 640i Gran Coupe Front View
Well, having just spent ten days in Automobile Magazine's Four Seasons Audi A7, I can tell you that the BMW 640i Gran Coupe is undeniably a sportier machine, but it's not a more desirable one. What we have here is an amalgam of 5-series, 6-series, and 7-series chassis and powertrain componentry. It's all top-drawer stuff, especially the turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine and the eight-speed automatic, which eagerly doles out the engine's 315 hp in smooth and satisfying increments. From behind the driver's seat, this Gran Coupe is a grand thing indeed. To my eyes, the Gran Coupe is nowhere near as attractive as the A7, although Mike and Tim, the guys who run an organic farm where I have a share this summer, didn't agree with me. When I pulled in to pick up my basket of fresh vegetables and greens the other day, they dropped their garden hoses, stood back, and gazed appreciatively. "That car is really a beauty!" said Tim. Mike, whose regular gig is working at one of Ann Arbor's better independent automotive repair shops, Orion Automotive Services, noted the twenty-inch wheels and wondered what they would cost to replace.
HAMANN BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Side
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe has just been worked over by renowned German tuner Hamann, and for once, the changes are on the conservative side.
AC Schnitzer ACS6 Gran Coupe Front Three Quarter In Motion 1
It was only a matter of time until tuners got their hands on BMW's voluptuous new 6 Series Gran Coupe. German BMW tuner AC Schnitzer left well enough alone, and performed only minor performance and cosmetic enhancements to transform the 640i and 640d Gran Coupes into the ACS6 Gran Coupe.
2013 BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe Front
As we had long expected, BMW will soon build a high-performance version of its sultry 6 Series Gran Coupe. The German carmaker has confirmed that it plans to launch the M6 Gran Coupe within the next twelve months.
