2015 BMW 2 Series
2015 BMW 2 Series

New for 2015

The BMW 2 Series now offers the xDrive all-wheel-drive system with the 228i and M235i, in addition to making the Track Handling Package available on 228i Coupe models.

Vehicle Overview

The BMW 2 Series is a sporty coupe that fits below the 4 Series as the automaker’s smallest available coupe. The 2 Series replaces the discontinued 1 Series.

The 2015 BMW 2 Series is a two-door coupe or convertible that is available in rear- or all-wheel drive, and comes with an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. xDrive models are only available with the automatic, as are all convertibles. The 228i models get a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, which is good for the following EPA-estimated city/highway ratings: Coupe 23/35 mpg (automatic/RWD) and 22/34 mpg (manual/RWD) 23/35 mpg (automatic/AWD); Convertible 23/34 mpg (automatic/RWD) and 22/33 mpg (automatic/AWD). The M235i models are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 that makes 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, which received a range of EPA-ratings: Coupe 21/32 mpg (automatic), 19/28 mpg (manual), 20/30 mpg (automatic/AWD); Convertible 21/32 mpg (automatic), 19/26 mpg (manual).
Notable features on the 2015 2 Series include an 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment screen, Harman Kardon premium audio system, adaptive HID headlights, parking assist (automated parallel parking and spot finding), a moonroof, BMW Apps (including M Laptimer), lane departure warning, frontal collision warning/city collision mitigation, pedestrian warning, and an adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers.
The 2015 BMW 2 Series has not been evaluated by the NHTSA but is considered a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 BMW 2 Series is a return to form for BMW, welcomed by enthusiasts (and journalists) because of its simplicity. The things that made the 3 Series great are alive and well in the 2 Series, but have become dull in the more luxury-oriented 3. In the M235i, BMW offers “the best six-cylinder motor not made by Porsche” and a chassis we’ve called “perfectly balanced” and “predictable.”
In an Around the Block Review of a 2014 BMW M235i coupe, we said, “The M235i exhibits the kind of focus that is too often missing from modern BMWs that try to please an ever-wider audience.” We liked it so much that we named it a 2015 AUTOMOBILE All Star, and after a spirited drive through some twisty, deserted, back roads with a Volkswagen GTI we said, “The [2-Series] and GTI might be starting from two polar opposites—a rear-wheel-drive coupe trying to downsize and simplify, the front-wheel-drive hatch trying to muscle up -- but the goal is roughly the same. Fun for real people on actual roads.”

Rear-wheel-drive coupes bring to mind beefy engines with high cylinder counts, fat tires, and blaring exhaust notes. People often forget that there are other ways to enjoy the handling benefits of a longitudinally mounted engine and a roof over your head. Today, you can even get rear-wheel-drive dynamics and muscle-car looks with 4-cylinder engines in cars like the 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost, and now the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro. So here’s the lot of them -- all 8 coupes you can buy now with rear-wheel drive and a 4-cylinder engine.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Back when 1989 was the year on the calendar and not an album title, you wanted to be seen in a BMW convertible. It was the ultimate car for yuppies. Now the yuppies have grown older, and BMW has spawned all manner of people movers to meet their needs. But it still offers the classic yuppie mobile -- minus the big 1980s car phone -- in the form of the 2015 BMW 2 Series convertible.

The BMW 2 Series coupe is heralded by many enthusiasts as today’s purest expression of the “Ultimate Driving Experience” spirit, but BMW is attempting to expand its smallest model’s appeal with the new 2015 BMW 2 Series convertible. This droptop model will officially debut at the 2014 Paris auto show in a few weeks, and is set to go on sale in the U.S. in early 2015.

The 2015 BMW 2 Series will be offered with all-wheel drive, whereas the cars are currently available only as rear-wheel-drive coupes. For the new model year, BMW will add the 228i xDrive and M235i xDrive models to its 2 Series lineup.
