New for 2015The BMW 2 Series now offers the xDrive all-wheel-drive system with the 228i and M235i, in addition to making the Track Handling Package available on 228i Coupe models.
Vehicle OverviewThe BMW 2 Series is a sporty coupe that fits below the 4 Series as the automaker’s smallest available coupe. The 2 Series replaces the discontinued 1 Series.
SummaryThe 2015 BMW 2 Series is a two-door coupe or convertible that is available in rear- or all-wheel drive, and comes with an eight-speed automatic or a six-speed manual. xDrive models are only available with the automatic, as are all convertibles. The 228i models get a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 that makes 240 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, which is good for the following EPA-estimated city/highway ratings: Coupe 23/35 mpg (automatic/RWD) and 22/34 mpg (manual/RWD) 23/35 mpg (automatic/AWD); Convertible 23/34 mpg (automatic/RWD) and 22/33 mpg (automatic/AWD). The M235i models are powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 that makes 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque, which received a range of EPA-ratings: Coupe 21/32 mpg (automatic), 19/28 mpg (manual), 20/30 mpg (automatic/AWD); Convertible 21/32 mpg (automatic), 19/26 mpg (manual).
Notable features on the 2015 2 Series include an 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment screen, Harman Kardon premium audio system, adaptive HID headlights, parking assist (automated parallel parking and spot finding), a moonroof, BMW Apps (including M Laptimer), lane departure warning, frontal collision warning/city collision mitigation, pedestrian warning, and an adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers.
The 2015 BMW 2 Series has not been evaluated by the NHTSA but is considered a 2015 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.
What We ThinkThe 2015 BMW 2 Series is a return to form for BMW, welcomed by enthusiasts (and journalists) because of its simplicity. The things that made the 3 Series great are alive and well in the 2 Series, but have become dull in the more luxury-oriented 3. In the M235i, BMW offers “the best six-cylinder motor not made by Porsche” and a chassis we’ve called “perfectly balanced” and “predictable.”
In an Around the Block Review of a 2014 BMW M235i coupe, we said, “The M235i exhibits the kind of focus that is too often missing from modern BMWs that try to please an ever-wider audience.” We liked it so much that we named it a 2015 AUTOMOBILE All Star, and after a spirited drive through some twisty, deserted, back roads with a Volkswagen GTI we said, “The [2-Series] and GTI might be starting from two polar opposites—a rear-wheel-drive coupe trying to downsize and simplify, the front-wheel-drive hatch trying to muscle up -- but the goal is roughly the same. Fun for real people on actual roads.”
