This was the first auto show for the BMW 1-Series which has already gone on sale in Europe, but isn't due Stateside until 2006. We won't be getting either of the bodystyles displayed here, the two-door and four-door hatchbacks. Nor are we likely to get any of the current European 1-Series powerplants, among them a 150-hp 2.0-liter four and a 163-hp diesel; that's okay, as we'd almost certainly prefer the 2.5-liter, 218-hp straight six that's slated for our notchback coupe. That bodystyle, by the way, is supposed to help us draw the connection between this newest, least expensive (although still probably $25,000 or so) BMW and its spiritual ancestor, the 2002.
