Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept to Bow in New York

After rumors and spy shots of a new Land Rover Discovery Sport, we now know our first look at the future of Land Rover SUVs will take place at the 2014 New York auto show. Land Rover released a teaser video of its upcoming Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept, a car whose design will inform future replacements for current Freelander/LR2 and Discovery/LR4 models.

The short teaser video shows that the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept will have a slightly longer and sleeker silhouette than that of the existing Freelander/LR2. We expect its styling character to more closely align with the sexy Evoque crossover, although certain design cues like the angled, body-color C-pillar will carry over into the next generation.

We also get to see a cursory tour through the Land Rover Discovery Vision’s interior, which apparently has three rows of seating for seven passengers. When the long-wheelbase seven-seat production version arrives in 2016 or 2017, it is expected to be called the Discovery Grand, while the standard five-seat version will be called the Discovery Sport.

If the British company’s $800 million investment into four-cylinder engine development is any indicator, the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept will employ four-cylinder power with a turbocharger. European bureau chief Georg Kacher previously reported that the Discovery Sport, “will be even more closely related to the Evoque for improved production synergies,” so the Evoque’s 2.0-liter turbo-four is certainly a possibility.

Discovery badging and names will presumably replace the existing LR2 and LR4 nomenclature. The move will aim to reinforce the Discovery line of vehicles as one of the three pillars of Land Rover, alongside the luxury-focused Range Rover and the off-roading Defender. Check back for a full look at the Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept when it debuts at the New York auto show, beginning on April 16.
