2016 Audi A3 TDI Hatchback Joins Lineup

#Audi, #A3

The 2015 Audi A3 lineup gained one new member at the 2014 New York auto show -- a diesel hatchback. Although Audi had planned to only sell the upcoming e-tron plug-in hybrid A3 as a Sportback model in the States, and to only sell the TDI diesel as a sedan, enthusiasts and prospective buyers convinced Audi to sell the diesel as a hatch, too.

“The A3 TDI Sportback has an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base, this new version has been one of our most requested models since the announcement of the new A3 family,” Audi of America president Scott Keogh said in a statement.

The 2016 Audi A3 TDI Sportback, like the sedan version already announced, will use a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four diesel engine rated for 150 hp. The engine mates to a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Although Audi has not released fuel economy information, expect a big improvement over the outgoing 2013 A3 TDI hatch, which achieved up to 30/42 mpg (city/highway) with the dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive.

The 2016 Audi A3 TDI Sportback won't go on sale until next summer. Before that, Audi will launch the 2015 A3 sedan with a gasoline engine, the A3 convertible, and the high-performance S3 sedan. The standard 2015 Audi A3 offers a 1.8-liter turbo-four engine rated for 170 hp and 2.0-liter turbo rated for 220 hp, while the S3's 2.0-liter turbo engine will produce roughly 290 hp. The Audi A3 e-tron Sportback plug-in hybrid will debut next year around the same time as the diesel Sportback.

Audi is almost there. If it was a Quattro I would in line to buy one.
Audi finally listened, as I'm sure we weren't the only ones who complained about the lack of a sportback TDI in the new generation A3 USA lineup.  The reason we bought our current A3 was the TDI drivetrain in a more attractive package than the less pretty VW Jetta wagon.  This is my wife's car and she wanted great mileage in a small but nice vehicle.  If we wanted a hybrid, we would have gone with a Prius, as Toyota seems to have the reliability of these systems down better than other manufacturers.  The last place I would look for an electronics-laden hybrid would be from VW/Audi, as simple electrical devices seem to fail in their products at a rate greater than the average. We'll keep our current car for a while, but if it gets crunched it's nice to know that the latest version will once again be available.  Now, if only BMW will offer their 328i/328i wagon in rear wheel drive or perhaps with a manual.  They need to take a leaf from Audi's playbook and listen to their core customers!
No manual transmission in any of the American-market Audi A3 models.   Not even this 5-door TDI.   Why?Am wondering if the 2015 Golf (gasoline) 5-door will offer a manual transmission.

And of course there will be no option to get a cloth interior/seating like the nice cloth they offer in the EU market.
Stupid, stupid Audi

Holy carp! They (apparently) listened, unless they were really planning on it all along and just teasing/baiting with the etron only 5 door.
Once again, no mention of if the TDI will require urea additive, unlike the 2013. Will it be avail. as a quattro model?
What is with companies showing 2016 products in the 1st half of 2014. We aren't even ready for the 2015 models yet. In normal years this would be considered counter productive as it would kill potential sales of one's own brand. Occasionally one will see a company do this when a competitor has a product where they don't yet have a answer. In any case can the 2017's be far behind? For myself, I don't hold my breath waiting for vaporware and go ahead and buy the best available now:)
