Some people get cakes on their 50th birthday, but the Ford Mustang will receive an entirely new trim package. To celebrate the half-century anniversary of its introduction, Ford announced today the 2015 Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition package.
The package's arrival is, technically, a day early, as the original Ford Mustang was introduced on April 17, 1964. Nonetheless, it makes sense to show off the new car at the 2014 New York auto show, given that the original Mustang appeared at the 1964 New York World's Fair.
As our spy photos revealed, the 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition will mostly receive cosmetic changes. Based on a standard Mustang GT, it will be limited to just 1964 cars, in reference to the Mustang's date of introduction. It will be available only in Kona Blue and Wimbledon White, both colors that are exclusive to the anniversary car; Wimbledon White was the color picked for the very first retail Ford Mustang.
Other visual tweaks for the 2015 Ford Mustang include chrome trim for the grille, windows, and around the taillights; a faux chrome gas cap in the rear fascia; and louvered quarter windows that recall the 1965 Mustang fastback. Inside, look for a unique aluminum dashboard trim, a 50 Year Limited Edition serial plate on the passenger side of the dash, leather interior trim with cashmere stitching, and special floor mats with suede and cashmere.
Every 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition comes as standard with the car's optional Performance package – and because 50 Year buyers can opt for either a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission, this will be the only way to get the Performance pack with an automatic. The package brings wider, 19-inch alloy wheels with Pirelli P-Zero tires; Brembo high-performance brakes; and a limited-slip differential. Ford also says the car's 5.0-liter V-8 engine will be upgraded to offer more than 420 hp and 390 lb-ft.
The 2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition cars will be available this fall, and will be some of the first retail-customer units of the new Mustang produced. Exact pricing will be announced closer to that date.
