Kia has been working harder than anyone to show the world that great cars can come from Korea. With the Amanti, the Spectra (and Spectra5 variant), and the reborn Sportage, the company has been storming almost every recent auto show with a new model release. They are finishing off their new product line this year with a completely redesigned, five-door Rio hatchback, which follows the sedan that debuted in Detroit. Kia promises more space and power and better handling with the ground-up redesign--the car has been engineered to appeal to European buyers' tastes. Compared to cars currently on sale in Europe, we think the new Rio looks rather uninspired and boring. If the looks don't sell, maybe the engine choices will. Kia claims class-leading power from three new engines--two gas and one diesel. Expect to see the Rio without the diesel option here in the States later on this year.
