2014 Chevrolet Sonic Dusk, Sonic RS Sedan Added To Lineup

Devo might have sung about freedom of choice, but it seems to be Chevrolet’s mantra when it comes to small cars. The 2014 Chevrolet Sonic was already available in seven forms, but at the 2013 Los Angeles auto show, the automaker unveiled another two variants – the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic RS Sedan and the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Dusk – that will soon be rolling into showrooms nationwide.

2014 Chevrolet Sonic RS Sedan

Chevrolet debuted its sportier twist on the Sonic formula in 2013, but restricted the Sonic RS trim level to the Sonic four-door hatchback body style. For 2014, the Sonic RS is now available as either a four-door hatch or a four-door sedan.

Despite the change in silhouette, the 2014 Sonic RS Sedan offers the same features as the RS hatchback, including a more aggressive front fascia, taller rocker sill accents, unique 17-inch five-spoke aluminum wheels, and a lower ride height – the latter thanks to a retuned suspension that’s stiffer than on other Sonic models. Buyers will only be able to chose from three colors – black, granite metallic, or silver.

Inside, 2014 Sonic RS Sedans mirror the appointments found in RS hatchbacks. Seats are trimmed in leatherette and faux suede and accented with red contrast stitching, aluminum pedal covers, and a bespoke shift knob for cars built with the six-speed manual transmission.

Don’t look for any additional power underhood – all 2014 Sonic RS models are equipped with Chevy’s turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder, which delivers the same 138 hp as it does in other Sonic trim levels. That said, the 2014 Sonic RS might feel slightly more spritely – automatic cars use a unique final drive ratio, while models built with manual transmissions use unique gearing. Sonic RS models also replace the rear drum brakes with 10.6-inch disc brakes.

Like all other Sonic sedans, the 2014 Sonic RS Sedan is slightly less expensive than a comparable hatchback model. According to Chevy, the 2014 Sonic RS Sedan is priced from $20,530, roughly $620 less than an RS hatchback.

2014 Chevrolet Sonic Dusk

If the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Dusk looks a bit familiar, it should – it was first shown as a concept car at the 2011 SEMA show, and an amended version was shown again at the 2012 SEMA show, where Chevrolet announced the package would soon go into production. Apparently, "soon" translated to “two years later."

The 2014 Sonic Dusk production car is very much like what we saw at the 2012 SEMA show. The car wears a ground effects package, matte-silver 18-inch aluminum wheels, and matte-finish upper and lower grille inserts. The Sonic Dusk can be ordered in any color you want, so long as it’s Ashen Grey Metallic. On that note, the car can only be ordered as a sedan.

As was the case on the concept car, the 2014 Sonic Dusk incorporates a two-tone interior, which splashes Mojave accents across a jet black cabin. Seats are trimmed in leather and garnished with sueded microfiber accents.

Power comes from the familiar 138-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, and buyers can order either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic. No further performance hardware is bundled with the Sonic Dusk model, though it does receive the rear disc brakes that are otherwise exclusive to the 2014 Sonic RS.

Pricing for the 2014 Chevrolet Sonic Dusk starts at $20,945, including destination, and like the 2014 Sonic RS Sedan, the Dusk should arrive at dealers this spring.
