The cute Opel Adam city car is entering the hot hatch wars with the new Opel Adam S that will debut this week at the 2014 Geneva auto show. Although the Adam S shown in Geneva is just a prototype, a production version of this car is expected to go on sale in the near future in Europe, where this 148-hp compact will go up against cars like the Fiat 500 Abarth and Mini Cooper S.
Sitting atop the Opel Adam range, the Opel Adam S is powered by a turbocharged version of the same 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that powers lesser versions of the Adam. Mated with a six-speed manual transmission, this powertrain produces 148 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot of power for a car that’s just slightly bigger than the Fiat 500, and Opel says the Adam S has a top speed of 137 mph.
Just as you’d expect, Opel has also upgraded the Adam’s chassis to go along with the extra power. The Opel Adam S gains sharper steering, larger brakes from Opel’s OPC high-performance division, and a specially-tuned suspension. 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, carbon-look accents, a body kit, and a larger tailpipe round out the visual changes for a more aggressive exterior look, and the interior is also upgraded with Recaro seats and red accents throughout.
Look for more news about this “near-production” model in the months to come, as we expect to hear more information about the final version of the Opel Adam S after this prototype’s Geneva debut. Opel/Vauxhall will also show off the Adam Rocks soft-roader in Geneva.
