Honda Civic Type R Concept Debuts In Geneva

The Honda Civic Type R is one of the most anticipated performance cars of the year, and, in typical Honda fashion, this concept version that debuted at the 2014 Geneva auto show is a thinly-veiled version of the production hot hatch that will be revealed in 2015.

Before we get into specifics, we have to start off with the sad fact that this hotted-up Civic is not coming to the U.S. anytime soon. This model is based on the European Honda Civic hatchback, rather than the coupe/sedan sold in the U.S., and it sets its sights on the contentious European hot hatchback market that includes cars like the Opel Astra OPC, Ford Focus ST, and the new Volkswagen GTI. Honda says that the aggressive-looking Civic Type R is heavily influenced by Honda’s racing division, and this new Type R features a turbocharged engine for the first time.

This 2.0-liter, direct-injection, turbocharged VTEC powertrain is a significant step forward for Honda, as the company plans to roll out a whole new lineup of small turbocharged engines with this performance-oriented powerplant sitting at the top of the range. The next Honda Civic Type R is expected to produce upwards of 276 hp, putting it near the top of its class in terms of power. Honda also aims to break the Nürburgring lap record for front-wheel-drive cars with this Type R.

Many of the Honda Civic Type R concept’s extreme-looking exterior elements are in the name of aerodynamics, including the front spoiler, the vertical side wings, and the enormous rear wing with its nifty integrated LED taillights.

Look for more news to come about the Honda Civic Type R as we get closer to the debut of the final production model early next year. In the meantime, check out the full photo gallery of the concept live from the Geneva show floor.

It is a crime against (North American car driving enthusiast) humanity that this is not coming across the ocean. Honda. Wise up.

Honda won't bring this to the US because they don't believe there are enough "young" and "capable" buyers out there for this car. I think they are completely wrong, but....oh well. I guess they will miss out on bringing an exciting looking car to this market. Yay!!! More boring Hondas.
Please Honda...PLEASE bring this to the US.  It's what we've been wanting in a Civic since the 90's!

Honda of America seems to get it wrong way more than they get it right, Insight, CR-Z, and the Civic debacle come to mind... It's long past due for Honda to just clean house and get some fresh ideas again in the US.
