Mazda Hazumi Concept Teased for Geneva Auto Show

Mazda has released a teaser for a new concept called the Hazumi that will debut at the 2014 Geneva auto show. Since the company is calling the Mazda Hazumi a “subcompact concept,” it’s likely that this car will closely preview the next-generation Mazda 2 hatchback that’s set to arrive sometime within the next year.

From what we can see from this somewhat revealing teaser, the Mazda Hazumi looks to adopt the brand’s Kodo design language that’s present on the current Mazda 6, CX-5, and 3 models. In fact, the headlight and grille design of the Hazumi closely mirrors the front end of the 2014 Mazda 3, as does the swooping character line that rises and falls along the side of the car. We wouldn’t be surprised if the next Mazda 2 ends up looking like a scaled-down version of the stylish Mazda 3 hatchback. Reports suggest the interior, too, will mimic that of the successful 3. According to Mazda, the word Hazumi means “bound” or “spring up” in Japanese, hinting that the company is committed to retaining the smallest Mazda’s fun-to-drive character.

Mazda is also using this concept as an opportunity to announce a new 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel engine. This new engine is much smaller than the existing 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D that’s offered in Europe in the Mazda 6, 3, and CX-5. We can assume that the new Euro-spec Mazda 2 will make use of this powertrain, and it’s likely to make its way into the Mazda 3 in Europe as well. As for this small diesel coming to the U.S., we wouldn’t get our hopes up considering the delayed arrival of the Mazda 6 diesel in the U.S. Previous reports suggest that in addition to the diesel, the Mazda 2 will use a range of small Skyactiv gasoline four-cylinder engines displacing either 1.4 or 1.6 liters.

Stay tuned for a better look at the Mazda Hazumi concept when it debuts at the 2014 Geneva auto show next month.
