Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Turbocharged Engine Teased Ahead Of Geneva Debut

Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge Concept

A new video once again hints that the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge high-performance sedan could use a turbocharged engine. Infiniti says it will reveal the car's engine at the upcoming 2014 Geneva auto show, after revealing the Q50 Eau Rouge itself last month at the 2014 Detroit auto show.

"With its Formula One-inspired carbon fiber bodywork, we thought it only fitting the Q50 Eau Rouge's beating heart was suitably sporting," Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen said in a statement. "Our engineers have perfectly captured the tone of Infiniti's take on premium performance."

The accompanying teaser video (embedded below) not only hints at the car's F1 inspiration, but also lends further credence to the idea of a turbocharged engine. In the video, the sounds of a powerful turbocharged engine can be heard running through the gears. In a statement, Infiniti describes the new mill as a "big personality engine with forced induction."

At the Detroit auto show, de Nysschen said that the Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge concept could go into production with either a naturally aspirated V-8 or a twin-turbocharged V-6. He also said that he envision the car offering at least 500 hp, putting a potential production version of the Eau Rouge on equal footing with cars like the new BMW M3/M4, which have a twin-turbocharged inline-six engine. Although the Infiniti Q50 is currently offered only with an automatic transmission, de Nysschen even hinted the Eau Rouge could have a true manual gearbox.

Despite all this boasting of the car's potential, Infiniti maintains that it has not made a decision about whether to put the Q50 Eau Rouge into production, noting however that, "Infiniti will continue to listen to feedback from potential customers." At the Detroit show, de Nysschen told reporters that Infiniti engineers still had "a lot of work to do" in terms of beefing up the Q50's drivetrain and chassis to be able to cope with a significant horsepower increase.

Compared to a standard 2014 Infiniti Q50, the Eau Rouge boasts upgrades like a wider body, a 0.5-inch lower ride height, a carbon-fiber roof panel, a vented hood, a new rear spoiler, a more aggressive front splitter, larger wheels and brakes, and a suede-trimmed steering wheel with paddle shifters.
