High-Performance Opel Astra OPC Concept Headed for 2014 Geneva Auto Show

The hot hatch segment is even hotter in Europe than it is on our shores, and Opel is planning on bringing an even more extreme version of the Opel Astra OPC to the 2014 Geneva auto show. Called the Opel Astra OPC Extreme Concept (or the Vauxhall Astra VXR Extreme for the U.K.), this hardcore hatchback takes inspiration from the Astra Cup race car that competed in an endurance race at the Nürburgring last year and is said to preview a limited-run production Astra to debut in the future.

The standard Opel Astra OPC (pictured) already produces 280 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, already trouncing hot hatches we see in the U.S. like the 252-hp Ford Focus ST and the upcoming 210-hp 2015 Volkswagen GTI. This Extreme version should produce even more power than the standard car. In combination with a significant weight loss thanks to carbon fiber components, this extra power should make the Astra OPC Extreme into a track monster.

The Opel Astra OPC Extreme concept is even outfitted with an integrated roll bar system, racing seats, and six-point racing seatbelts to give it even more track-ready credibility. Vauxhall calls it the “street-legal race sibling” for the standard OPC, and it definitely looks the part with its aerodynamic add-ons and racing graphics.

The arrival of this concept is interesting considering a recent report of a more hardcore Volkswagen Golf that could be called the Golf R Evo. This amped-up, lightweight Volkswagen would certainly compete with the eventual production version of this Opel Astra OPC Extreme if it comes to fruition.

Look for more information about the Opel Astra OPC Extreme Concept to come closer to the 2014 Geneva auto show in March.
