First Look: 2013 Audi RS4 Avant

Audi has released full details and photos of the 2013 RS4 Avant ahead of the car's debut next month at the Geneva Motor Show. As was expected when photos of the car leaked earlier this week, the 2013 RS4 Avant shares its feisty powertrain with the 2012 Audi RS5 coupe.

Under the hood of the 2013 RS4 Avant is a version of Audi's direct-injected 4.2-liter V-8, which makes 450 hp at 8250 rpm, and 317 lb-ft of torque between 4000 and 6000 rpm. Power is sent through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to quattro all-wheel drive, with a special torque vectoring rear differential. Audi says the 2013 RS4 Avant can sprint from 0-to-62-mph in less than five seconds with the Launch Control engaged. Top speed is limited to 155 mph, but can be raised to 174 mph "if required" (we assume this requires paying an Audi dealer a princely sum).

The car's appearance isn't too surprising, not least because we spied a test mule lapping the Nuerburgring in Germany last year. Compared to the regular Audi A4 Avant, the 2013 RS4 Avant gets a bigger mesh grille, larger wheels, a new front fascia with gaping lower air intakes, a bold chrome rear diffuser flanked by big oval exhaust tips, a flat-bottom steering wheel, and carbon-fiber interior trim pieces. Nineteen-inch wheels are standard, although the car is available with an optional 20-inch design.

The RS4 Avant rides 0.8 inches lower than a regular A4 Avant on firmer, adjustable suspension. The car also has a sportier steering ratio than other A4 models, and special "wave" brake disc rotors (measuring 14.4 inches in front) that are designed to help reduce heat build-up. Optional are carbon-ceramic brake rotors measuring 14.9 inches in front.

The 2013 RS4 Avant goes on sale in Germany this fall.
